Helen was, to say the least, pleasantly surprised when the principal remembered her name immediately. With all of the new information that Sierra had no doubt been bombarded with since taking the principal position, Helen was sure it would take Sierra much longer before remembering people's names.
"It's only natural to be nervous," Helen said with a smile. "You're coming into quite a big job, and Bayville High isn't the smallest high school around. I'm sure you'll do just fine. Remember that you have an army of teachers and faculty members to back you up."
For most things, anyway. Case in point was one of the first new hires Sierra had picked out, the mutant janitor. Helen wanted to stand behind her principal, of course, and would support Sierra as best as she could, but Helen would definitely need to get used to Sierra's methods and way of thinking.
And, if necessary, play the role of devil's advocate.
"Oh, I'm always ready for a new school year," Helen said, stepping away from the side of the gymnasium so she and Sierra could walk and talk. ( Gigabyte in particular)

In the sea of faces of students and teachers alike, Lance did his best to remember each one that expressed interest or came over to sign up for the baseball club. He generally tried to make his goal to remember faces, names, to keep in mind what they looked like, what they might be good at. At least some skills from his upbringing could be useful, sometimes. But one quickly stood out among those passing by, Olivia. He hadn't seen her for a little while since he came by the school to finish his application stuff. But before he could open his mouth, the teen had blurted out a question he was hoping to avoid. Lance cleared his throat in embarrassment as a few eyes turned to him, lightly pulling at his collar, " Good to see you too Olivia." He mumbled softly, usually not minding when attention was turned on him. But at an event like this, that was...the last thing he really wanted. ' Thanks a lot brother.' Lance couldn't help the bitter thought pass through his mind, quickly pushing it to the back of his mind as quickly as it had come. Besides, she had already blurted the question out, so there was no really turning back at the inquiry. And the booth had slowed a bit in activity, so he could afford a short conversation. " I did, just family matters. I wouldn't concern yourself about it." Lance tried to keep his usual nonchalant attitude, attempting to gloss over the matter. " So, you found any clubs yet? Know the choices could be a little overwhelming." He tried to redirect the topic, glossing over the topic regarding his family as quickly as he had brought it up as well. It took sometime for Laurie to consider club options. There was a fair few topics and subjects that caught her eye, but felt like it would fall too on the nose. She for a brief moment considered taking Book Club, even spotting her fellow Brotherhood housemate Adam at the booth. But, she easily could read anything she wanted, and she did that basically on a daily basis... Dismissing the club, Laurie eventually stopped at the booth with the International Club, her appearance briefly giving them a startle. But, after a bit of breaking the ice, the blue skinned teen had gladly asked her questions, what they did, and signed up with them. Giving a small wave, Laurie gave the ones in charge a quick smile before she left the table, taking a pamphlet of theirs to read over. Now that there was one down, she figured maybe she could try the sports booths. She had been involved with track before moving down this way, maybe Bayville had a decent track team available? Well, only one way to find out. As Laurie turned her attention to cross her way through the crowd, her attention drifted to the pamphlet in hand, trying to read and carefully weave her way through the crowd. Even this early in the morning she was surprised with the turnout of the students. She figured most would have slept in or avoided open house entirely, that it would generally be more parents than students. But, it was a surprisingly big turn out. Enough Laurie had to tear her gaze away from reading the card stock pamphlet to try and pay attention in front of her. Although, she paid attention a little too late finding herself nearly colliding with Cherry and Roy. Out of reflex, she quickly leaned herself back, hovering just a couple inches off the ground before landing again, " Crap, I'm sorry! I should have been paying a bit more attention!" She quickly apologized towards the two recruits, looking equally flustered and apologetic. Tags: @cherrybomb, HydroNotes: Hope you two don't mind a near run in!

246 words | Toad in particular, referencing @transonic, Hydro, and @cherrybomb. Anyone is welcome to interact with Mason! One of the first things on Mason's to-do list at the open house was to find his mother. She was easy enough to spot considering he knew she would be manning the book club's stall for most of the time, and Mason ducked behind the stall to give her a quick hug. After their brief reunion, his mother shooed him away so Mason could go and explore the school himself.
He passed by many of the stalls, trying to figure out what he wanted to do. He made sure he was still on the roster for the track team and decided to also sign up for the high school's newspaper team. He guessed the newspaper would be the best way to stay informed with the rest of the goings-on within Bayville High.
Mason was trying to decide if it was a decent time to see if the barbeque was fired up, but he passed by the janitor, recalling him from when Mason and his mother were first enrolling him. Greeting the man with a grin, Mason said, "Hey, Mr. Tolansky! How's it going?"
He made his way closer to the janitor so he wouldn't have to shout, his gaze roaming around the area to continue taking in the sights, and Mason stopped dead in his tracks when he spotted someone with blue-skin...
...Who promptly almost crashed into Roy and Cherry.
Mason winced on her behalf, still finding her looks fascinating, and brought his attention back to Mr. Tolansky.

| WHEN I WAKE UP, I'M AFRAID, SOMEBODY ELSE MIGHT TAKE MY PLACE... |
The little student in front of him cheerfully handed him a pen and pointed to the sign-up sheet, even going so far as to ask the teacher that was evidently in charge of the booth if there was anything else they needed to do.
"I see," Adam said, giving the girl a nod and a quiet thank you after she shared the instructions with him. He signed his name presumably under hers. He hoped the teacher would be able to read it. His handwriting wasn't the best, after all.
The teacher confirmed that signing up was all they needed to do and that they would be notified when the first meeting was. She then introduced herself and asked for their names as well.
"Ms. Perez," Adam repeated, giving her a nod of greeting and trying his best to commit her name to memory. "I'm Adam Clayton. Um... I have English Lit. III second period, but, uh, I forget what teacher I have... I just got my schedule recently. Coming into the school as a new transfer."
He shut his mouth then, hoping he didn't talk too much.

Whoops. Olivia bit her lip at Lance's mumbled greeting to her, and she acknowledged to herself that getting into a fight was probably not something Lance wanted blurted out to the students and faculty around.
"Looks like you won?" she said with a small shrug and a crooked smile. It was kind of hot to her, actually.
Olivia let the subject change -- she wasn't a fan of talking about family, either -- and she nodded when Lance asked if she found any clubs that she liked. "Eh, I'm going to try out for the cheerleading squad," she said. "Figured it'd be a good way to stay in shape, stay in the know-how of everything going on, maybe get some of that school spirit that some of you all seem to like..."
She glanced back up at the decorations and the title of the stall they were actually at. "Did you decide to be coach for the baseball team because it was what you took when you were here at Bayville High?"

Words: 193 Tags: Incognito, referencing Nightcrawler:sweeney, open to others to interact. To say that Todd was surprised to hear someone call to him was a massive understatement.
To be honest, he was about to hightail it out of the open house, hoping that he'd be able to leave without being spotted by Teach or any of the other faculty. He would figure out how to pick up the kids from his boarding house later, finding that to be a minor detail to him leaving.
However, someone else knew his name and greeted him rather enthusiastically. It took Todd a few moments to remember where he saw the kid before giving him a crooked, bemused smile. "You're the kid that was around when we were all doing enrollment paperwork, right?"
Todd, on his part, shrugged. "Not doing too bad, I guess. You? You an' your mother settling in alright?"
He may as well be polite, right? There was no telling how many -- or how little -- supporters Todd and Teach would have when it came to Todd being employed at the school. If some of the student body didn't mind Todd's existence, maybe the nastier members of the staff would follow suit.
Like that Sweeney lady.

Tag: @transonic, @cherrybomb Words: 222 Notes: Since it's been a little over a week, I wanted to respond to/keep the conversation going with Transonic. Cherry, definitely jump in again when you can! Wandering around the open house, Roy was a little surprised at how many sports and clubs there were. He wasn't sure what he expected, to be honest, but everything in front of him was not it.
Roy was thinking of joining the swim team, figuring that would be one of the easiest -- if not the easiest -- extracurricular for him to join, but if someone found out about his mutant abilities, he was certain someone would cry foul. He wouldn't use his abilities to cheat or anything, but it would be his word against everyone else's.
He was about to ask Cherry's opinion, see how she felt about everything they were passing by so far, but a flash of blue appeared in his peripheral vision. He jumped at the same time the young woman -- the very blue young woman -- in front of them did the same, simultaneously apologizing and...
Floating?
Roy took a few seconds to gape before remembering that it was impolite and cleared his throat. "Uh, don't worry about it," he said. "Are you okay?"
After a pause, he added, "I'm sorry, too," figuring that she would understand that he was apologizing for staring so. He adapted quickly. Her skin wasn't too much of a difficult color from Kurt's. "I'm Roy Kingsley, this is Cherry. Both new kids to this place."

Tag: Noelle Perez and Golem in particular Words: 163 "I'm Willow Foster," Willow said to both Ms. Perez and Adam. "It's a pleasure to meet both of you!"
To Ms. Perez in particular, Willow said, "I have English Literature II sometime after lunch... I forget when. But I'm also a freshman, so if I don't have you as a teacher this year, I have three more chances! Unless you retire or something between now and when I graduate," she added as an afterthought.
She picked up one of the book samples and asked, "Are these some of your favorites, Ms. Perez? Or does the school suggest books for the club? What about you, Adam, have you read any of these?"
Willow actually paused for a moment before looking back up at the teacher. "Wait, I think I know your last name... Do you have a son named Mason? I know him and know that his mother is a teacher. If so, hi! Has he come by to say hello to you yet?"

Noelle was very amused at how opposite Adam and Willow seemed to be in terms of personality. Both were polite, but the former spoke quietly, just loud enough for her to hear, while the latter spoke much more candidly, quickly, and cheerfully.
"Well, I'm not planning on retiring anytime soon," Noelle assured Willow. "I'm certain I'll see both of you around the school itself."
While Willow admitted to being a freshman, Adam mentioned that he was new to the school as well, and Noelle said, "My son and I are new to Bayville, too. Perhaps you'll meet him in your classes."
Speaking of her son, Willow actually piped up about him and Noelle raised an eyebrow. "Why, yes. Mason is my son. He did come by and say hello already, thank you. I'll be sure to let him know that one of his friends signed up for the book club."
Noelle wanted to ask Willow how she knew Mason, but Noelle guessed that it had something to do with the Xavier Institute. Her curiosity about Willow doubled, wondering why Willow was enrolled in the institute itself, but Noelle restrained herself from asking.
Of course, with how friendly both Mason and Willow appeared to be, they simply could have met here at the open house already.
The conversation turned to the books on display and Noelle said, "Some of these are my favorites. The school board has no say in what books we do for the book club, so I try to sneak in a few that the curriculum may not be thrilled about...
"Adam, what kind of books do you like?" Noelle asked, trying to draw in the shyer of the two students further into the conversation.

157 words | Toad in particular Mr. Tolansky seemed a little surprised that Mason had greeted him, and Mason wondered if he was a little too loud. Mason was also acutely reminded that not every mutant was able to hide in plain sight amid humans, and he felt a pang of guilt at the thought of Mr. Tolansky always being on the alert because of what he was.
Nevertheless, Mason grinned in return to Mr. Tolansky taking a moment to remember him. "That's right," Mason said. "Mom and I were there at the main office at the same. Mason Perez, if you need a reminder.
"We are, yeah," Mason answered when Mr. Tolansky asked if he and his mother were settling in alright. "Well, I have, at least. Haven't heard my mom complain about the new house." Not that his mother would complain. She wouldn't want Mason to worry. "Are you ready for the school year? I hope everything is going well for you, too."

| WHEN I WAKE UP, I'M AFRAID, SOMEBODY ELSE MIGHT TAKE MY PLACE... |
The little girl talked a lot. Willow, she said her name was, and Adam was honestly pleased that he had remembered that amid all of the information Willow spouted.
Ms. Perez and Willow spoke back and forth about retirement and the teacher's son -- which was probably the most bewildering thing about their conversation to Adam -- and Adam was going to try to sneak away as they chatted. However, both of them ended up asking Adam about the books that were on display, apparently curious as to what kind of novels he read.
"Um." He took a moment to think after being put on the spot. "The books here don't look too familiar. I'm not too picky, really. Not a fan of nonfiction too much, but I'll read almost any type of fiction."
That sounded like a decent response, right?
Out of the corner of his eye, Adam spotted a couple of his housemates, and he decided to make his escape. "It was nice meeting both of you," he said, "but I have to go. I'll, uh, see you when school starts."

Tag: Nightcrawler:sweeney in particular, but all the Bayville High people Words: 176 Notes: Ending the thread here. Thanks everyone! Helen's words reassured Sierra in a way that she hadn't expected. Granted, Sierra was aware that her new position would be nerve-wracking, but she wasn't one to succumb to nerves in such a way. Still, to have it voiced aloud and the reassurance that she would have back-up was very much welcomed.
"Thank you," Sierra said, hoping her tone sounded warm and appreciative enough to convey how she felt.
She looked around the gymnasium, enjoying the crowd that had come to the open house. As far as she had heard, there hadn't been any ruckus at the event, with both students and faculty behaving themselves, and she was pleased to see the majority of the attendees mingling well. There were plenty of new students coming into the school, least of all most of the new recruits at the institute, as well as some of the faculty and Sierra hoped that everything continued to run smoothly.
To Helen, Sierra said, "Have you had lunch yet? Perhaps we can continue to talk if you'd like to eat together..."
