Description: Mason is almost six feet tall and will most likely hit his growth cap at a few inches past the mark. He has dark brown, nearly black, eyes and black hair that's buzzed short. He generally sports a small goatee that he at least keeps neat when he can't be bothered to do a full shave and is sometimes seen as older than he really is due to it. Due to his active lifestyle, Mason is built with lean muscles, and he doesn't mind showing them off! He's not one to usually dress in simple t-shirts. Instead, he does his best to look fairly stylish and clean-cut with well-fitted shirts, jeans and pants, and maybe a vest or two.
Personality: Mason is the type of guy that doesn't mind being a goof. He's always up for fun, be it a party, a good prank, or just hanging out with a good friend for the afternoon. He's the type of guy that hates seeing someone else with a long face and will do whatever he can to turn the frown upside-down. He does his best to listen and give out advice, but does sometimes find it difficult to stay on topic since his mind is always going in several different directions.
Very social, Mason loves to stay busy and connect with as many people as possible. He has a love of learning and truly tries to connect with his fellow students and instructors, doing his best to draw others in with questions and comments. His favorite type of people are ones who share his curiosity and love of exploring. When it comes to romantic prospects, he can be a bit skittish only because he's afraid of being tied down. Mason is independent and always want to roam free. He's not a "player" by any means and does not know the jealousy emotion.
With his zest for adventure, Mason can be considered reckless. He has no problem heading off into a new situation without much preamble, which could very well cause trouble. Other people, while maybe finding his goofy tendencies funny or adorable at first, may soon be annoyed and wondering if Mason can ever be serious.
Powers: Chameleon Physiology. Mason's main ability is camouflaging into the background. By concentrating, he can make his coloration -- skin, clothes, and items on his person, such as backpacks, included -- blend into the background to avoid perception. Mason must stay completely still to maximize the ability's full potential.
Side effects of his chameleon physiology include multi-directional vision and enhanced climbing. He is able to individually control each of his eyeballs to see in two different directions at once. By default, his eyes move together in the same direction, but he can see in multiple directions if he concentrates. His wallclimbing ability enables him to effortlessly move on virtually any surface, such as rock walls and tricky trees. Coupled with his wallclimbing ability comes an enhanced sense of balance.
Weaknesses: As previously stated, Mason's camouflaging ability works best when Mason is standing completely still. Although he can move while using his ability, he would need to completely concentrate in order to continuously have his coloration match his surroundings. Those with sharp eyesight may catch a glimpse of his outline wavering in the air as he moved.
While he is able to roll his eyes in multiple directions, he cannot see through the back or side of his head. He can only see out of his eye sockets. Although he has the wallclimbing ability and enhanced sense of balance, Mason is unable to climb a surface without gaining friction. He does not have a sticky hold in order to effortlessly scale smooth walls -- he needs a way to gain a hold of what he is climbing in order to keep his balance.
Considering his chameleon physiology, Mason shares a few characteristics as the reptiles, namely shedding and being cold-blooded. Chameleons shed bits and pieces of their skin at irregular intervals as they grow when they age, something that Mason's activated x-gene decided to do as well. His shedding is rather irregular at this time, most likely due to his body trying to reach his full height, but there will still occasionally be evidence of his skin shedding here or there. With his cold blood, Mason can be sluggish during colder weather. While he makes up for it by being extremely active during the warmer seasons, it is difficult for Mason to not just sleep the days away during the cold weather.
Skills/Hobbies: Mason enjoys being active (despite his cold blood) and is usually moving with a spring in his step. He's not one for most organized sports, preferring games with more freedom, and as such enjoys doing track for high school. He also enjoys traveling and staying up-to-date with the latest news. He enjoys playing video games as well, particularly RPGs where he can create an avatar and be a heroic adventurer.
History: Mason Perez was born to Donovan and Noelle Perez in Chicago, Illinois in the U.S. of A. The couple were fresh out of college with he an acting major and she a journalist. Mason doesn't remember much of the city at all, for the little family moved to Los Angeles, California when Mason was about three years old. It was in Los Angeles that Donovan scored a few small-time acting gigs that helped pay the bills, with Noelle supplementing their income with her newspaper articles. The family got along fairly well and energetic Mason was never wanting.
Eventually, however, Donovan began to stay later at auditions and rehearsals. Noelle didn't mind at first, but she soon realized that the family was not getting paid any further for the extra work that he was putting in. After an ugly confrontation, it was found out that Donovan was cheating on Noelle with an actress on his latest set. The couple divorced and Noelle won full custody of eight-year-old Mason. Immediately, she moved her son and herself to Tampa, Florida. Mason and his mother were very close, and he grew up well, making decent friends while his mother supported them with her writing as she worked toward a teaching degree.
It was Mason's fault that his mother and he had to move again. When he was fifteen years old, Mason's mutation began to show itself by shedding his skin as he went through a growth spurt. It unfortunately happened while he was in school, with his friends finding large chunks of his shedded skin in the boys locker room after they showered at the end of gym class. He was sent to the nurse, who was frazzled and could only babble something about dandruff shampoo, and Noelle was called down to pick him up.
While waiting for his mother, Mason was so embarrassed and upset about what was going on with his body that he wished to disappear into the background. His mutant gene obliged by making him blend in with the nurse's lavender polka dot wallpaper.
The nurse fainted.
Noelle seemed to take her son being a mutant in stride and took charge of the situation. With all the commotion that Mason had caused, Noelle thought it would be best to pull him out of that school system. Being a pro at moving by now, the mother and son duo went to New York City, where Mason did his best not to shed or show off his camouflaging. Things were going well enough for the next year and Mason's mother completed her teaching degree, gaining the license to teach in the state of New York.
The pair moved one final time during the summer right before Mason's junior year of high school to Bayville, New York, where Noelle accepted a teaching position as an English teacher. Mason hopes to fit in well, not only for his teenage social life, but also for his mother's new job.
First Appearance Scene: Mason can easily be seen out and about town, probably having just moved recently into Bayville.
