Date: Tuesday, July 25, 2023 Words: 205 Tags: @transonic Notes: Going off of the idea that Laurie is starting to settle at the boarding house. Figured we could also open it to Ava's Mist and/or Golem after a couple of replies, if you're cool with it?He had another one.
Todd shook his head, staring but barely reading the paperwork in front of him detailing yet a third teenager that had just joined the Brotherhood Boarding House. He didn't think he'd be responsible for kids -- teenagers, whatever they were -- when reopening the doors to the boarding house. At this rate, no other sane adult would want to join the boarding house lest they get roped into helping a high schooler with homework.
He zeroed in on the paperwork again, making sure everything was in order for Laurie to officially be a ward at the Brotherhood. She seemed like she'd be quiet, at any rate, kind of like Adam.
"Hopefully they'll all get along," he muttered to himself and poured whatever was left of the lukewarm coffee from the pot on the stove into a mug. He grimaced at the taste as he downed it black before abandoning the mug on the counter and heading towards the stairs.
"Laurie?" he called. "You good picking a room up there? Got some high school forms for ya." After a moment, he added, "No rush, I guess, just figured you may want to get it over with."
God, he'd probably had to text Parker again...

Finding the Brotherhood Boarding house had thus far been her only good string of luck in the past year. At least, in Laurie's mind it seemed to be the only good stroke of luck. It felt like the prior months had been an eternity, finding her luck plagued by one disaster after another, topped off by her (possible) unfortunate turn of discovering she was a mutant among everything else. Perhaps the most visible of powers anyone could have. But, she wasn't about to argue with her current living arrangements. Least it was some place to stay. Pushing her more depressing thoughts to the back of her mind, Laurie tried to put all her focus on finding a room and at the very least getting everything somewhat settled. It was a basic set up, a bed, nightstand, dresser, and a closet and some shelves. Nothing that couldn't be turned into a living space that reflected her own tastes down the line. For now though, she settled with the basic layout as she took a little time to put her things away. However, the crystalline blue skinned teen couldn't help pausing as she looked at herself in the mirror set up in the room, scowling at her own reflection for what felt like the hundredth time since her mutation had kicked in. She no longer recognized herself. The fair skinned, brunette haired, brown eyed teen with a promising future seemed gone, replaced by this blue skinned, red haired stranger with her name. Conflicting feelings flashed in her silver-white eyes, contemplating if she would ever fully embrace being a mutant or forever resent this new change that had lied dormant in her genome... Laurie's thoughts snapped back to reality however when the voice of Toad carried up the stairway. " I'll be right down Mr.Todd!" She called back, giving herself one final scornful glance before finishing unpacking her suitcase and little bits here and there, moving her suitcase into the corner of the closet before she headed out of the room she had chosen. Giving a quick glance at the other rooms, Laurie vaguely wondered about the other residents, what kind of roommates would she be dealing with knowing they were mutants as well. Were their mutations as obvious as hers? Were they quiet or loud? Troublemakers? Laurie was more curious than concerned, but figure it was something she would have to wait on down the road as she made her way downstairs. " I'm as settled as I can be sir, thanks again." Laurie confirmed politely, her gaze noticing the bit of paperwork Todd had been preparing. Well, she would have to go back to school again at some point. There was no hiding the visible concern in her expression at the thought. She had already been a bit of an outcast for being a nerd, but to go to school like she was now..." Right, school..." She mumbled as she approached to look over the paperwork, hesitance clear in her movements. Tags: Toad , and whoever else joins! Notes:And sure, whoever might be interesting in joining is welcome to!

Words: 306 Tags: @transonic, Mist/Golem if they'd like to join too!Slightly bemused at "Mr. Todd," Todd shrugged to himself and returned to the kitchen to wait for the kid to come back downstairs. He busied himself with staring at the contents of the refrigerator, trying to figure out if there was enough food for the now-quartet living at the boarding house for the rest of the week. Maybe he could ask Olivia to transfer an advance on her next month's rent from her mother's bank account...
Laurie appeared before long, throwing Todd for another loop by calling him "sir," and Todd thought to ask, "Just Todd is fine, if you want. Ya got any allergies or things like that?"
He gestured to the high school transfer paperwork on the table, inviting Laurie to at least take a look. If she could get it all over with now, he'd be able to bring both hers and Adam's to Parker by the end of the week.
"It's not too much," Todd said, taking out a jar of something from the refrigerator and sniffing it. "Mainly the typical emergency forms and stuff for your class schedule. On the scrap paper to ya left I wrote down the boarding house and my information if you need it and want to use it for the emergency forms."
He couldn't figure out what the stuff in the jar was, let alone decide if the sniff test was passable, so he tossed it into the garbage. Todd paused when he glanced at her expression, putting two and two together regarding her apprehension.
He used to have that same apprehension because of his physical mutation, too.
"No rush, as I said," Todd reminded her, going back to the contents of the fridge. "Ya got time. I'll be going into the school occasionally anyway as I start working there as the janitor." After a heartbeat, he added, "The principal is pro-mutant, too."

" I'll keep that in mind, old habit." Laurie admitted with embarrassment. Growing up, her parents had always taught her to regard those older than herself with respect, such as using Mr. and Mrs. when interacting with her elders. But, she noted herself to not having to do so with the boarding house landlord. Moving over to the table as Todd went through the fridge, Laurie began going through the papers, flipping through them a bit as she listened to the man. " No, no allergies." She confirmed starting to read through the packet of papers, signing her initials where she needed to or her name. It seemed like the usual necessary information when signing up for school including all emergency information. She paused for a moment after filling out Todd's information, pondering her own family if things really became serious. She was doubtful, but she did have family there in New York if they ever needed to be contacted. After a few minutes of thinking, she decided it was for the best. For now anyway. She paused again when Todd mentioned the paperwork could wait, shaking her head slightly, " Better to get it done now rather than later." But she went quiet for a moment at his last words, guessing he had noticed her expression. " Suppose that's a comforting thought." Tags: Toad

"Todd, please tell me we still have coffee grounds..."
Olivia wandered into the kitchen, clearly not yet awake as she bypassed both of the other kitchen occupants in order to reach the cabinet that held the mugs. She grabbed one of the mugs, saying, "Seriously, get more than one bag at a time--Ah!"
The mug slipped from her hands, the ceramic shattering and causing a short yelp from above the kitchen. A second after the yelp, there was a crack in the ceiling. Heavy footsteps were heard briefly before becoming lighter until said footsteps were heard coming down the stairs. Breathing heavily, a second teenager appeared in the kitchen threshold, his gaze darting the room.
"Olivia? Okay?" he asked.
"What?" Olivia tore her gaze from the crack in the ceiling, bewildered at everything that just happened in the span of five seconds. Her gaze darted to the blue-skinned teen before looking back at Adam. "Yeah, I'm fine, I just... I dropped the mug. Didn't expect someone else to be here with Todd, that's all. Aw, I liked that mug..."
Olivia began to clean up the shards but pointed to the crack in the ceiling. "Adam, did you just go all rocky?"
Adam, looking sheepish, nodded. "Uh, yeah. I'm sorry. I just... I heard the, um, mug break. The sound spooked me." He looked up at the ceiling, frowning slightly. "I hope that can be fixed... I can sleep elsewhere until it is."
"Yeah, there are plenty of rooms," Olivia said casually. "Just make sure you don't take our new housemate's room," she added with a nod to the blue-skinned teen.
"Well, elsewhere meaning outside," Adam murmured. He did give the blue teen a wave and say, "I'm Adam Clayton. Hi."
"I'm Olivia Nolen--Did you just say outside?" Olivia paused in tossing away the mug shards, her introduction to the new girl interrupted by her incredulous question to Adam.
"I'm used to it."
"What? No, you're not supposed to be used to it. Todd, tell him."
"I broke the room, though. I shouldn't--"
"No, you get a roof over your head no matter what." Olivia turned to the new girl and said, "We're a little dysfunctional here, evidently, but I'm sure you'll be fine."

Words: 214 Tags: @transonic Mist/Golem Notes: @ Ava's notes!"Don't worry about it," Todd said when Laurie apologized for calling him sir. "If you're more comfortable with it, I don't mind. Just don't have too many folks callin' me that, that's all."
Then Olivia appeared, and Adam caused his bedroom floor and the ceiling to crack, and a mug was broken, and Todd nearly got whiplash with the way Olivia and Adam spoke to each other. Todd looked up at the crack in the ceiling, rubbing his head as the kids' words washed over him.
"Yeah, I can fix it," Todd said. He'd figure it out (and possibly figure out a way to reinforce the flooring against a mutant who could turn into a walking boulder). He raised an eyebrow at Olivia and Adam when they bickered about Adam sleeping outside, and Todd said, "Kid, you're sleeping inside. I mean, if you wanted to camp out, fine, but you're not going to be kicked out to sleep under the stars as punishment for an accident."
Despite their rather unorthodox entrance, it was good that Olivia and Adam both introduced themselves somewhat normally to Laurie even though they were initially startled at her appearance.
Dryly, Todd said to Laurie, "Sorry if ya already signed the contract and you're having second thoughts about this place."

In the span of seconds, the mood of the room seemed to quickly shift from quiet and casual to chaotic and lively. Laurie barely processed everything that happened. Initially, she had just heard someone moving about, not exactly looking up until she heard a feminine voice followed by a scream and mug breaking. Her own reaction was to fly upwards from being startled, ducking slightly as the ceiling above her head cracked followed by heavy to normal footsteps seemed to race down to join them. It was only when things seemed to settle down a bit did the blue skinned teen realize Olivia's reaction came from seeing her for the first time making her wish she had pulled her hood up before she came downstairs as she had prior to coming there. Well, too late for all that now. " Laurie Tromette." Laurie introduced herself as she landed back on the floor. She hadn't gone too high, and luckily had not hit the ceiling either despite being startled. Compared to her form, the two seemed like your every day teenagers especially with how they bickered back and forth. A faint sense of envy washed over her then, wishing her own mutation was less obvious as theirs. Well, save for Adam's it seemed. From the way Olivia had mentioned about him going rocky, it sounded like he could turn into a humanoid rock or something. " Dysfunctional seems about right." She agreed with Olivia's statement, shifting her gaze to anywhere but the two, her own self-conscious side starting to kick in about her new looks. Even a mutant like Olivia had seemed startled by what she had become, making Laurie wonder if she could do this. Seemingly on cue, Todd remarked about the rental contract, causing her to shake her head. " I'll figure it out. Suppose it will become common place when you don't see a blue skinned person walking around often." She assured him putting her hands in her pockets. Tags: Mist/ Golem, ToadNotes:

| WHEN I WAKE UP, I'M AFRAID, SOMEBODY ELSE MIGHT TAKE MY PLACE... |
Adam blinked owlishly when both Olivia and Todd took him cracking his bedroom floor -- and, subsequently, the kitchen ceiling -- in stride. Sure, the two of them had been surprised, but Adam wasn't going to be punished for it.
"I can help," he said when Todd mentioned he'd fix the crack. He'd have to pay them back somehow.
"Or we can get a contractor in here," Olivia said, sipping the coffee she successfully brewed amid the introductions. Her wide gaze matched her innocent tone. "And if we get a contractor in here, maaaay-be we can extend the closet spaces in the bedrooms... Just a thought, Todd..."
Adam tilted his head, still a bit confused at Olivia trying to get more room in her closet, and he looked to Laurie. "Nice to meet you," he said. "Flying is your ability? That's kind of like Olivia. I'm, uh, sorry if we startled you." She made a comment about her skin and Adam tried to think of something to say, wanting to remain on the good side of the others in the house. "I, um, think it's a pretty blue--"
"Laurie, back me up here," Olivia said, trying to catch the other girl's attention after evidently failing to convince Todd to expand the closet spaces. "Have you seen the itty-bitty closets? There's not much room, right? Todd should totally get someone in here to renovate this place."
"I don't think they're too bad--"
"You're a guy, Adam." Olivia sighed dramatically, but her lips were curved in a smile as she took another gulp of her coffee. "Women get more accessories and outfit pieces."

Words: 183 Tags: @transonic, Mist/GolemLaurie made a comment about being a blue-skinned person walking around, and Todd gestured to himself. "Or a green-skinned," he said. True, his own skin wasn't as bright as Laurie's, but he was all too used to seeing how humans looked at him for his odd coloration.
"If you want, kid," Todd said when Adam mentioned helping to fix the cracked ceiling. "It shouldn't be too big of a job--We're not getting a contractor in here for that!"
Why the hell was Olivia still harping about bigger closets?
"Ya got plenty of space," Todd said. "Mix and match pieces, be thrifty, all that kind of stuff that makes it so you don't need too many pieces of clothing. I don't understand why you think you need a different outfit for every day of the month," he added, grumbling.
"Clothes aside," he said, giving a side-eyed glance at Olivia but turning his attention to Laurie, "is there anything else you need? Dunno if you got much of a chance to really look and figure that out since you came down here for the paperwork."

" Right..." Laurie looked sheepish when Todd reminded her of his own green skin. But her attention didn't remain on Todd long before she was drawn back to Olivia and Adam. As Olivia went on about getting a contractor, Adam commented about her ability to fly, causing her to smile a bit as she slowly became more comfortable with the other two teenagers. " It's part of what I can do, I can also go super fast and my skin sorta...changes? I don't really know how to explain it." Laurie hadn't really thought to explore her powers since they manifested, having found herself too focused on her bad streaks in life to really think about them. " And no its fine, I suppose we just need to get use to each other is all." She assured Adam hoping it might ease the slight tension among them from her own remarks. She would have to work on that if she was going to have them all as roommates, and to try and be more positive in their living situation. Not too long after that, Olivia drew her into her's and Todd's back and forth regarding closets. Laurie's smile soon became an amused one. As dysfunctional as the group seemed to be, there was an almost normal family charm to them as well. She only shook her head, " I think I have to agree with Adam and Todd Olivia, I've never been big on having a lot of clothes and accessories myself. I think we should be fine with the closets we have." Besides, Laurie didn't really need clothes if she remotely was honest. Her form didn't leave much to the imagination, but neither was she exactly nude in a general sense of the word. But out of her own concern for modesty she wore clothes, as well as out of habit. " Maybe we can find a way to be creative with our spaces." She suggested as Todd had, but turned her attention back to the man when he asked her if there was anything else she would need, shaking her head. " No, I should be fine for now Todd, thank you." She assured him, her tone and body more relaxed than when she had come down the stairs. Tags: Toad , Mist , Golem

Olivia hid her smirk at Todd's reaction to her pestering him about contractors and bigger closets. She wouldn't say no to more closet space, but it was more of a joke to her at this point.
When even Laurie decided to side with the guys on the closet debate, Olivia threw her free hand up dramatically. "Ah, not you too! You're supposed to be on my side!"
Although Laurie did mention that her skin sort of changes, whatever that meant. Olivia tilted her head and asked, "Like, as in shapeshift? Maybe that's why you're not on my side, you can change all on your own anyway. That's pretty cool to hear, though. Adam changes his skin, too."
With the attention on him, Adam's eyes widened minutely before he pointed needlessly to the ceiling and said to Laurie, "I can change my skin into a rock armor, if you want to call it that. Sometimes not on purpose, like when I'm startled... It lets me control some of the earth, too."
"Think it's called terrakinesis," Olivia put in. "I can turn into mist. It's good for sneaking." Her smirk was still in place as her gaze shifted to Todd.

Words: 185 Tags: @transonic Golem/Mist Notes: Exit Toad, but if TC would also like this to be the end of the thread, let me know. Todd nodded to Laurie when she mentioned she was fine for now, and he heaved a sigh when it became apparent that she at least had some sense in her when it came to closet space. Of all the things he had to argue about as a landlord...
Granted, he also never imagined the majority of his tenants being teenagers. What a hand Life dealt him.
At least Laurie seemed more relaxed at the moment. Despite their initial meeting, Olivia seemed to be good at taking things in stride and Adam just followed along. Todd was pleased that the three were getting along right now and hoped that they would continue to do so. He didn't need a trio of emotional teens at war with each other under his roof.
He did not miss Olivia's smirk as she spoke with Laurie about closets and their abilities, and he rolled his eyes. "If you children are all set," Todd drawled, "think I'll go find my tools and figure out how to fix Adam's floor. Laurie, welcome to the Brotherhood. Hope ya don't regret it too soon."
