Sunday, July 16, 2023 | 430 words | open! | come and say hi to incognito! Mason took a deep breath and gazed about his new room, finding it odd that he had up and moved for the third time in, what, two months? Three months?
Whatever. Coming up to New York City from Florida then to a house in Bayville then to a freaking mansion in the same city was a bit much to think about. Mason was surprised he didn't get whiplash from everything.
On the bright side, he hadn't needed to pack much for his move to the institute. Most of his belongings were still in boxes from when he and his mother had moved from the Big Apple to Bayville earlier in the month.
Mason had gotten a brief tour of the estate from Sierra (which was another thing entirely, how weird was it that he was living in a place with his new principal?) before being dropped back off at his room to unpack and decompress from everything. He had turned off the central air in his room in favor of opening his window for the warm, summer breeze, finding the heat more comforting. He left the door open, hoping it would invite any others around to pop in and say hi. Mason was looking forward to meeting his housemates and classmates, and hoped that at least a few of them weren't shy about meeting the new guy.
Unpacking, he placed his favorite framed picture of himself and his mother in the center of the shelf and took a step back to admire his handiwork. Mason sighed and rubbed his head, already missing his mom, even though he'd see her often enough at the high school. Having just recently moved to Bayville, Mason hoped that she wouldn't be too lonely in their new house alone. Maybe one day he'd surprise her with a dog or cat...
For now, Mason took in his new surroundings, still finding it simultaneously odd and awesome that he had found a place with a bunch of other teenagers (and some adults) like him. Xavier's Institute seemed to be the best place to give him answers and support regarding his mutant abilities, and it would have been ridiculous if he hadn't taken advantage of it and his mother had agreed.
He moved on, continuing to unpack what he had and making his bedroom as homey as he could while also being sure to not take over the entire place. He had to be sure there was enough room for a potential roommate, after all. Once he was settled, Mason glanced around and wondered aloud, "Now what?"

it's a new soundtrack i could dance to this beat welcome to new york -- taylor swift words: 162 notes: nada "Now you be social and meet everyone else." Eddie grinned from the new guy's doorway, his body leaning against the threshold. By the (very good) looks of the new guy, he didn't seem to be the shy type, but Eddie supposed looks can be deceiving. He supposed he should play it cool and polite.
"I'm Eddie," he said, introducing himself while crossing the threshold to hold out a hand to the other guy. "My room's right next door with my roommate Roy. You'll meet him soon enough, if you haven't already. He's got navy-blue hair.
"I mean, there are plenty of other interesting things about Roy," Eddie continued, "but his hair will be the first thing you notice. Roy is the, uh, veteran student around here. I've been here for about a month. So, thanks for not making me the new guy anymore!"
Vaguely, Eddie wondered how many other new recruits would grace the halls of the estate before the summer was over...

203 words | Foxtrot, open! | yay for rekindling these friendships! At the sound of another voice, Mason whirled around and grinned with the other teen. He seemed to be a bit shorter than Mason (which wasn't hard, given Mason's recent growth spurt), dressed casually, with a grin of his own. The other teen seemed friendly and obviously open to new people, something that Mason hadn't realized he was worried about if his feeling of relief at seeing a smiling face was any indication.
The introduced Eddie walked in without much preamble and Mason met him halfway to shake his hand. "Mason," he said amicably. "Mason Perez. Thanks for the welcome."
Mason flopped onto his bed, gesturing for Eddie to do so if he wanted. "Alright, so you've been here for about a month. What about Roy? How long has he been here as the veteran?"
He paused a moment before asking, "There any other new recruits besides us three guys?"
Mason actually chuckled to himself and said, "I suppose the obvious question I should be asking is what can you do? What earned you the invite to this estate? Gotta admit, it's blowing my mind a little to see such a place exist for others that can do funky things like I can, you know?"

The lights are so bright but they never blind me welcome to new york -- taylor swift words: 327 notes: same! Mason Perez. The guy was pretty tall, and Eddie was glad that Mason took a seat on his bed. At the invite, Eddie joined him, bouncing a little on the mattress as he got comfortable.
"Roy said he's been here for a couple of months before I showed up," Eddie said, trying to pinpoint more of a timeframe as an answer to Mason. "Thinking on it now, I'm realizing I don't really know when he arrived here... But he's a good guy, knows what's up around here."
Although, now Eddie was curious as to when the institute was opened in the first place. He figured it was kind of new considering how empty the place originally seemed, but he was aware there was some history to the estate. Kurt, Sierra, and Bobby, who recently returned to the manor, to home, as he called it.
"Aside from us three dashing gentlemen," Eddie said, "there is a lovely young lady named Willow. She's only been here about a week or so longer than me. I'm sure you'll meet her soon, she's super friendly. She's also the best cook in this place. One of the first lessons I've learned here is that her baked goods do not last long in the kitchen, so if you smell cookies, get your ass to the kitchen as soon as you can."
Eddie chuckled as Mason finally asked what his mutation was, and he nodded in agreement when Mason said that it was mind blowing to see and know so many other mutants. "It is weird, isn't it? Not going to complain about it, though. It's been entertaining so far here, and the teachers have been nothing but supportive.
"Sierra says I'm an audiokinetic," Eddie said. "I do stuff with sound waves, make them solid, I guess, for offensive and defensive purposes. Got some stronger hearing, too, but it's mainly the sound waves thing. Can't use my own singing voice, though. What about you?"

Mason listened as Eddie answered his questions, the other teen's tone casual and informative. Eddie seemed like the sort that would be easy to talk to, and Mason hoped that the rest of the household would be just as friendly.
He knew how to live with his mother, but learning the personalities of several new housemates was something else entirely.
"By the sounds of it, this place may have just opened up this past spring then, huh?" Mason asked, trying to figure out the timeline of the estate. He grinned when Eddie praised Willow's baking skills, and he said, "I'm looking forward to meeting both Roy and Willow, then. Sounds like we'll be a good group, probably give Ms. Parker and the other teachers a run for their money."
He paused a moment before saying, "So... are any of us originally from Bayville? Have you been to the high school, yet? Is it strange to, uh, live with the principal?"
Mason's eyebrows raised when Eddie spoke of his mutation, and he grinned when the other mentioned stronger hearing. "Get into any trouble with that yet?" he asked with a chuckle. "Man, that all sounds pretty cool, though. Think eventually you'll be able to use the sound waves from your voice? Mom did a bunch of research about activated mutant genes when my own mutation appeared, and there was some stuff about mutations evolving further. Or something like that, anyway.
"My mutation makes me share similarities with chameleons," Mason continued. "Camouflage, a bit of enhanced climbing and balance... Can see in multiple directions." He demonstrated this by keeping one eye on Eddie and moving the other's gaze toward the far side of the room.
"Mom wonders if my powers ever evolve further," he said, "maybe I can go invisible completely."

welcome to new york it's been waiting for you welcome to new york -- taylor swift words: 214 notes: nada "I actually have no idea when this place opened up," Eddie admitted. "I heard that Kurt and Sierra, uh, Ms. Parker, were here when they were teenagers, too. Bobby as well, but he's kind of the newest teacher around here. Was the new guy right before you showed up.
"I have not been to the high school, no," Eddie said. "I grew up in Cloudcroft, New Mexico with my grandparents, and Roy is from Ohio. I don't know about Willow, actually... It is absolutely strange to think about the fact that we live with our principal, yeah." He leaned back on his elbows on the bed and grinned. "Haven't gotten into trouble yet, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time..."
He listened as Mason mentioned his own mother and the research she did when it became apparent that her son was a mutant. Eddie vaguely wondered if his own parents would have taken his mutation in stride like that.
"Evolve?" Eddie echoed. "That would be pretty awesome, actually." He laughed when Mason did his eye trick, and said, "Speaking of getting into trouble, don't tell me you're the pinnacle of honor with powers like those!
"Was it because of your mother's research that you found this place?" Eddie asked out of curiosity.

Mason thought about how the teachers of the institute were students themselves at the place once upon a time. He hummed for a moment before saying, "I wonder what happened to everyone, then... Why are there only a handful of us? Maybe it was always a small, private school?"
He glanced around the dorm and, with a crooked grin, asked, "Kind of a weird thought that the adults of the place may have slept in the same dorms we're in now, huh?"
Eddie mentioned where he and Roy had come from, and Mason said, "I've been all over the place, really. Don't really remember Chicago from when I was born, but I remember a little of Los Angeles when I was a kid." He paused a moment before continuing on. "Mom and I moved to Florida after the divorce, then we came up here to New York after my mutation manifested and freaked out my school nurse in Tampa. Now, here I am."
After a moment, Mason said, "So, wait, if Willow is from Bayville, then that means three out of four of us new recruits will be brand new to Bayville High in the fall? I'll have to meet her sooner rather than later, then. Sounds like she'll be our tour guide."
Mason actually burst out laughing when Eddie commented about him getting into trouble. "Man, I now live with the principal and my mother is a teacher at the high school. I'm going to get away with nothing!
"That's actually how we found out about this place," Mason said when his laughter died down a bit. "Mom's new job is an English teacher at Bayville High, so we were filling out paperwork both for her job and me to enroll in the school, and we met up with the new janitor who is also a mutant, which helped Mom and me tell Ms. Parker about my own mutation and..." He spread his arms out, gesturing widely. "There we go. How'd you find out about this place?"

everybody here was someone else before and you can want who you want welcome to new york -- taylor swift words: 319 notes: nada Eddie could only shrug when Mason wondered aloud what happened to the institute in the past to make it seem empty at this point, but he did make a small face when the other teen mentioned that there was a decent chance one of their current teachers had slept in the same dorms.
"Hope the bedsheets were washed," Eddie quipped.
Eddie sat up straighter as Mason detailed everywhere that he had lived throughout his life. "Holy shit, man," he said. "That all sounds... It sounds amazing, moving from place to place. I'm sorry to hear about your folks' divorce, though..." He cleared his throat and tried to direct the conversation away from that particular detail. "Did you have a favorite place that you've lived? LA sounds like it'd be the most exciting!"
The idea of little Willow playing the role of tour guide to all three of the guys made Eddie smirk, but he said, "You know what, I think she'll be a freshman. Even if she is from Bayville, she'll still be new to the high school like us. Sierra will have her work cut out for her, trying to make sure us four don't get lost while running the school!"
He laughed right along with Mason when the other mentioned that his mother was also a teacher at the school. "So, if I get into trouble with her, I can drop your name and be good, right?" Eddie asked.
"One of the janitors is a mutant?" Eddie raised an eyebrow, surprised. "He... he was open about that? He told you?"
Mutants weren't a secret to the world, but it was generally understood that it was something most don't proclaim about themselves. Eddie was raised by conservative grandparents who advised him to keep quiet about his mutation -- rather, what they understood of it -- in an effort to keep him safe, Eddie was sure. Maybe Bayville was more open-minded...

334 words | Foxtrot | I am good to keep going as long as the conversation flows between these two, but let me know if/when you'd like to start wrapping it up. Mason snorted when Eddie said he hoped the bedsheets were washed, but he listened as Eddie seemed enthralled at how often Mason had moved in his lifetime. On his part, Mason gave a small shrug and waved off Eddie's sympathies that his parents got divorced.
"Thanks, but no need for that," Mason said. "Mom and I are doing great. I don't remember too much of my dad, anyway." His father hadn't been home enough to really make much of an impact on Mason's childhood.
"LA wasn't too bad at all," Mason continued, "but it was huge. I was just a kid, so maybe I couldn't appreciate it enough back then. Lots of different things going on there, though, lots of different people. I'm sure I would have soaked up so much more culture if I was older. Can't complain about the moves, though, except for the fact that I never had a steady group of friends. Mom is adamant about not moving again for another ten years or so, ha!"
He laughed when Eddie commented about how Willow would also be new to Bayville High, and Mason said, "Well, at least we'll all get lost together." He shook his head in regards to Eddie dropping his name to his mother. "Nah, that won't help you at all. If anything, you'd probably look more suspicious if you tried to use me as an excuse to get out of trouble."
The fact that the janitor was an open mutant seemed to catch Eddie off guard. Mason sheepishly said, "Well, don't think the guy has much of a choice but to be open. You'll know him when you see him. His skin had a green tint and his legs were long, like, disproportionately long." He paused. "I met Kurt briefly when Mom and I were talking about me coming here, and I've seen his true looks but I've also been told he has this device called an image inducer. Guess Todd, the janitor, doesn't have one of those."

boys and boys and girls and girls welcome to new york -- taylor swift words: 253 notes: sounds good to me! thanks for the thread! Eddie gave a crooked grin when Mason snorted at his ridiculous joke about the bedsheets, and he listened as Mason mentioned that the downside of all the moves he's done in his life is the lack of a steady friend group.
"Well, hey." Eddie nudged Mason's arm with his own. "At the risk of sounding like a cheeseball, I'm planning on our group of new recruits into a great friend group. I'm adopting all of you as my friends, so you'll be stuck with us."
Mason seemed to cement the idea with his comment about all the new recruits getting lost in the high school together. Eddie himself never really lacked friends while growing up -- he was fairly extroverted, after all -- but it was still a relief to know that he wouldn't be the only new kid at the high school.
He chuckled when Mason said that dropping his name to his mother wouldn't help Eddie stay out of trouble at all, and Eddie said, "Thanks for the warning, then. I'm sure she's a great teacher. I hope I have her for some class or other.
"I'm also looking forward to meeting this Todd, too," Eddie said, "especially if he's an out mutant. Guess we'll see how Bayville High treats mutants, huh?"
Eddie pondered on that for a moment before leaping up from the bed. "Hey, I feel like I've been taking up too much of your time. C'mon, let's go find everyone else in the mansion so you can properly meet them."
