Date: Monday, July 10, 2023 Words: 250 Tags: Noelle Perez/Incognito, then Gigabyte Notes: The Perez family's first appearance!Todd had half a mind to go back to S.H.I.E.L.D. after all the nonsense he had to deal with when applying for an actual job. Being hidden under the radar with a secret government agency didn't make him fill out so much paperwork. Being a little over two weeks since Parker had offered him the janitor position, Todd figured he wouldn't need to be back at the high school until the semester actually started.
Then came the drug test, then the contract, then the benefits and retirement packages and paperwork, as if Todd would end up staying long enough to take advantage of them...
All that and Olivia's transfer paperwork was the reason as to why Todd went to the high school again. He was pretty sure he'd been at the high school more in the past month than he had during his high school years.
As he entered the main lobby, grumbling at the paperwork all the while, he paused when he noticed that he was not the only one in the school. Waiting in the office were, by the looks of it, a mother and son, probably a new transfer.
Todd cleared his throat, gave a small wave, made a brief mention of, "Hi. New janitor," and took a seat on the other end of the lobby to wait for Parker.
Guess he'd see how a new parent would take to sending her son to a school with an obvious mutant on staff.

375 words | Gigabyte Toad | I'll switch between Mason and Noelle for this thread. Thanks guys! Mason shifted in his seat next to his mother, doing his best not to fidget too much. While he hadn't gone through a growth spurt in a while, sometimes the warmer weather and too much movement can still cause some shedding.
What a first impression it would be to leave behind chunks of flakey skin on the waiting chairs.
Mason wasn't quite sure how Bayville High would take to him. Considering his mutant abilities weren't destructive -- although they could definitely aid in some mischief -- and the fact that more and more mutants were known in the world, Mason wasn't one to really hide that he was a mutant. He wouldn't show off his powers, but if someone asked, he wasn't going to lie.
"Easy, baby," his mother murmured from beside him, scribbling something on one of her notepads. Ideas or outlines for one of her next freelance articles, Mason was sure.
"I'm calm," Mason said and gave his mother a crooked smile when she glanced at him with one eyebrow raised.
Truth be told, he was more nervous for Mom than himself. They had decided they were going to be frank with the principal -- who they heard was new and hopefully would be progressive -- and let them know that Mason was a mutant and that, no, it wouldn't effect his grades nor his classmates. If the principal wasn't receptive, then his mother would homeschool him.
While Mason would miss out on the social aspect of the public school, he just hoped that his mutation wouldn't cost his mother her new job at the school. He didn't think she could legally get fired just because her son was a mutant, but he was sure the school board could get creative if they really wanted her gone.
Then a guy with green skin and legs just long and strong enough to look a bit abnormal walked in, seemed just as surprised to see Mason and his mother, and briefly explained that he was a new janitor.
Mason grinned at seeing another mutant, and he returned the janitor's wave with enthusiasm. "Mason Perez, new student. Hopefully."
"I'm Noelle Perez," his mother said, a smile curved on her lips, "Mason's mother and new English teacher. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Tags: Toad, Incognito/ Noelle PerezWords: 240 Sierra walked out of her office, a folder filled with references, transcripts, and resumes when it came to the Perez family tucked under her arm. With her mind, she wouldn't need to refer to it at all, but others liked the appearance of preparation.
"Good morning, Ms. Perez," Sierra greeted, her smile moving onto Mason as she added, "and Mr. Perez. I'm Sierra Parker, and it is wonderful to meet you in person. Welcome to Bayville High."
She didn't let much of her surprise through her tone as she spotted Todd and said, "Good morning to you, too, Mr. Tolansky. You're a bit early for our appointment. Have you all met?
"This may actually work out well for all of us, though." Sierra waved all three of them into her office, having just enough chairs before her desk for the trio. "Unless any of you have any objections, we can finalize everything together. There's not much else paperwork-wise to go through for the transfers and new employment statuses."
Indeed, she had a few last pieces of the teachers' contract and some union information for Noelle, a course catelogue for Mason to get his schedule finalized, and she took the retirement package information from Todd to be sure it was all in order.
"You've also a student enrolling?" Sierra asked when she realized that some of Todd's paperwork was transfer information for one Olivia Nolen.
Did Todd Tolansky have a child?

Words: 198 Tags: Incognito/Noelle Perez, GigabyteWell, this was new. Todd did his best not to seem too surprised when the mother and her kid greeted him as a normal person (and kind of enthusiastically, on Mason's part), but he couldn't deny that it felt rather nice. He gave them a crooked smile and said, "Todd Tolansky. Uh, nice to meet you too."
Parker showed up not too long after, and Todd gave her a nod of greeting and a shrug when she mentioned that he was a little early. He hadn't expected that there would be anyone else on Parker's schedule. When the principal mentioned that they could all get their stuff done together, Todd figured it would be best. The sooner he was done, the sooner he would be out of there.
Todd gestured for Noelle and Mason to go into the office first. May as well keep up a friendly pretense. Who knew how many other faculty or students would look at him with disdain when the school actually started.
"Uh, yeah," was his eloquent response when Parker asked him about the student enrollment papers he had. "Turned the Brotherhood place into a boarding house. Olivia's a tenant, per her mother."

The entrance of Mr. Tolansky helped ease Mason's fidgeting, and Noelle would have been grateful for just that even if the janitor wasn't a mutant. Already Noelle was getting a good feeling from Bayville High. Perhaps this would be the last move for Mason and herself for quite some time.
Sierra Parker emerged from her office right on time for their own appointment, and Noelle exchanged a handshake with the principal. "It's wonderful to meet you as well," Noelle said. "Please, call me Noelle."
Mason echoed his mother with a, "Nice to meet you, ma'am," to his new principal.
Neither had any objections to Mr. Tolansky joining in on their appointment. At this point, it was mostly formalities. When there was a lull in the conversation, Mason cleared his throat and gave his mother a pointed look, one that Noelle understood clearly.
"Ms. Parker," Noelle said, "there is something that Mason and I wish to share with you, and the rest of the faculty," she added, with a nod towards Mr. Tolansky.
"Mason is a mutant," Noelle said without any further preamble. "His abilities are non-destructive and I can assure you that they will not interfere with his nor any other students' work. I do have hope that he will be accepted and cared for here just as any other student. If this is not something that you believe Bayville High can achieve, then I will pull Mason out now and home-school him."

Tags: Toad, Incognito/ Noelle PerezWords: 201 Todd Tolansky was running a boarding house and taking in teenagers. Color Sierra surprised, although she only showed it with a raise of her eyebrows. Still, it was rather impressive considering the Todd she knew from back when they were teenagers.
It was a curious thing that a teenager's mother would send her daughter to a boarding house in another city, but it wasn't any of Sierra's business. Perhaps caring for a child is what caused Todd to apply for the janitor position in the first place.
She took the transfer paperwork for Olivia, finding everything to be in order before finding a couple of places that Todd's signature was needed as her legal guardian for the time being.
Noelle seemed to be just about finished with her paperwork as well, and very professionally revealed that Mason was a mutant. It was rather refreshing, to be honest.
"Thank you for sharing this with us," Sierra said. "Believe me when I say that Mason will not be the only mutant in this school. My aim as Bayville High's principal is to ensure that all are welcome and feel safe within these walls. Mason, may I ask what it is that you do?"

Words: 210 Tags: Incognito/Noelle Perez, GigabyteTodd wasn't quite sure what to make of Parker's surprise when she began going through Oliva's transfer paperwork. Granted, Parker's only impression of Todd was from when they teenagers themselves, but surely it wasn't that much of a leap to think of Todd being somewhat of a responsible adult?
Hell, the Perez people seemed to think better of Todd than Sierra did if their reactions to his appearance and the fact that the mother included Todd when she made her little speech about her son being a mutant.
In fact, Todd chuckled when Parker mentioned that Mason would not be the only mutant in the school, and Todd gestured a bit needlessly to his looks.
"Don't worry, kid," Todd said to Mason. "Pretty sure Bayville High is startin' to be known for openly having mutants within its walls.
"That's actually something Olivia will have in common with Mason here, aside from them both being new," he continued. He paused a moment before adding, "Actually, I dunno if Olivia is willing to share that about herself, so I'd appreciate it if you kept that quiet.
"But that's what the boarding house is for," Todd said, directing his attention back to Parker. "It'll be a place for mutants, if they need it."

Mason couldn't help it. He breathed a sigh of relief at his mother's no-nonsense way of telling Ms. Parker about his mutation and the easy acceptance from both his principal and the new janitor of the school. In fact, Mr. Tolansky chuckled and gestured needlessly to himself when the topic of mutants came up, confirming that he himself was a mutant rather than a human with an unusual skin condition.
Mason grinned in return when the janitor mentioned how Bayville High was starting to become known for mutants, even if some may not view that as a positive attribute of the school. Regardless, it sounded like Mason would be just fine, for the most part. Of course, there was no telling how his peers and the other faculty would find him, but at least Mason had his mother, the principal, and one of the custodial staff members on his side.
At Ms. Parker's prompting, Noelle let Mason take the lead and Mason cleared his throat. "Think the best way to describe what I do is like a chameleon," he said. Briefly, he demonstrated, his body molecules shifting to match the colors of the chair, floor, and his other surroundings until he was virtually invisible. When he stopped camouflaging, he added, "My eyes can go in two different directions, too. I promise I won't use any of this for cheating or skipping class or anything of the sort."
"Those possibilities shouldn't even be a thought in your mind," his mother said dryly, and Mason cast her a sheepish smile. Noelle's eyes narrowed at her son, but she turned her polite smile back to Ms. Parker. "Side effects of my son's mutation includes the occasional skin shedding, unfortunately, and we've found that he is much more sluggish in the colder seasons much like a cold-blooded reptile. I presume the school's heating system would prevent him from dozing off in class during winter, but it is a possibility nonetheless."
"You run a boarding house for mutants?" Mason couldn't help but ask Mr. Tolansky. "That's awesome! Does it get crazy?"
"The Brotherhood, you called it?" Noelle asked him. "I'm afraid I haven't heard of that one. I've heard of the Xavier Institute, actually, but unfortunately not the Brotherhood."

Tags: Toad, Incognito/ Noelle PerezWords: 265 Todd's appearance seemed to keep Noelle and Mason at ease, and Sierra was silently thankful for him being there. This was one of the main reasons why she hired Todd in the janitor position -- combined with his resume and interview, of course. Perhaps her choice could be viewed as favoritism, but in their current times, having an out mutant on the faculty should prove to be for the best in the future.
Bayville High aimed to welcome everyone, after all.
Sierra listened intently as Mason described his abilities. "Fascinating," she said. "They do sound as if they won't be disruptive at all, with the occasional nap, perhaps, during the colder seasons. I don't expect the heating system to malfunction at all. That's what we have him here for, after all," she added, gesturing to Todd.
Todd, too, spoke up to assure Noelle and Mason that Mason would fit in just fine and surprised Sierra again to mention that his teenage charge Olivia was also a mutant. He then added that he wasn't sure if she shared that detail and asked the rest of them to keep mum about it, to which Sierra nodded.
"Is that the purpose of the Brotherhood Boarding House?" Sierra asked. "To take in teenage mutants?"
She was delighted when Noelle mentioned that she had heard of the Xavier Institute, and Sierra paused for a heartbeat, contemplating. Taking a deep breath, she said carefully, "If you'd like to know more about the Xavier Institute, I will be more than happy to speak to you about it. I am also a teacher there."

Words: 275 Tags: Incognito/Noelle Perez, Gigabyte Notes: Exit Toad. Todd watched as the kid nearly turned invisible in front of him, and almost snorted out a laugh as the kid mentioned that he promised he wouldn't use his powers to his advantage by skipping class or the like. Todd himself would have done just that if he had chameleon-like powers like Mason, but perhaps Todd shouldn't mention that at the moment.
Particularly when Parker gestured to Todd, already talking up Todd's ability to do his job. Sure, being a janitor wasn't glamorous, but to be needed was kind of nice, especially when someone who was more or less a rival from his teenage years was admitting that she would count on him.
"Uh, teens weren't exactly what I had in mind," he admitted when Parker asked about the purpose of the Brotherhood Boarding House. "I had some discrimination against me when I first moved back to Bayville and tried to find a place. I was able to nab the Brotherhood house and figured I would open it for mutant renters. But, hey, if teens need a place to stay too, I won't kick them out as long as they can make the rent.
"I did just reopen it," he said to Mason. "It's not crazy... yet. Ya want crazy, talk to her about the Xavier manor." He jerked a thumb towards Parker.
Since talk did seem like it would dissolve into the Xavier Institute, Todd actually stood up. "That'll be my cue to leave, if we're all set," he said. To Noelle and Mason, he added, "Uh, welcome to Bayville."
He gave Parker a small nod and made his way out of the office.

Noelle couldn't help but smile when Sierra seemed interested -- in a good way -- in Mason's abilities, and Mason himself couldn't stop grinning. While Noelle had hoped for a positive reaction, she hadn't expected such open arms in regards to mutants.
Considering the school had hired Mr. Tolansky as a janitor, Noelle supposed she shouldn't be surprised at Sierra's reaction.
And Mr. Tolansky had a second job as a landlord and caretaker to, apparently, young mutants himself. "Even if teenagers weren't exactly your planned tenants," Noelle said, "what you do is still very admirable." As Todd left, she bid him goodbye, both she and Mason mentioning that it was nice to meet him.
"Wait, you're a teacher at the institute, too?" Mason echoed to Sierra, his eyes widening after that little fact was dropped. "Does that mean you're also a mutant, Ms. Parker?"
Noelle had heard that all of the staff at the manor were mutants as well, and she pondered on the way Sierra mentioned that she was a teacher at the institute. "I'm going to hazard a guess that most, if not all, of the staff knows that about you," she said, giving her son a glance. Mason nodded, understanding that, like the Olivia girl, Sierra also being a mutant wasn't common knowledge around the high school.
"Maybe Mason will be enrolling in another school as well," Noelle murmured, giving Mason a small smile. Turning it to Sierra, she said, "Once we're finished with the Bayville High enrollment, why don't you tell us all about the Xavier Institute?"
