| WHEN I WAKE UP, I'M AFRAID, SOMEBODY ELSE MIGHT TAKE MY PLACE... |
The woodlands behind the Brotherhood Boarding house was probably one of Adam's favorite parts of the place. It was simple for him to escape the confines of the building's walls and just hang out in the woods, laying down in the grass with the trees for company.
Which was what he was doing now. The autumn air was chilled, the beginning of November giving them an idea as to how cold the winter may be, and he enjoyed seeing the foggy state the morning brought upon the woodlands. He could just barely see his breath when he exhaled, opting to use this time to enjoy the outdoors before the cold really settled in around the foliage. He was fully ignoring his backpack a few feet away from him that filled with homework that needed to be done today.
There were many perks to being at the Brotherhood Boarding house rather than his old gang, but homework was not one of them.

Mornings like this, Laurie was internally relieved for. Mostly because it meant a sort of cheat day with her personal training with testing the limits of her abilities. Par for the course with her, she had made an effort to try and take about thirty minutes in the mornings to do some personal training, mostly for more embarrassing reasons. But with winter right around the corner, the temperatures were dropping and foggy mornings were becoming more and more common. Maybe she could do with a bit of fresh air. Most of her important school work was completed, and any chores were minimal at the moment, so stepping outside wouldn't hurt for an hour or so. Besides, new place, new habits right? So, the blue skinned mutant laid down the book she had been reading for much of that morning and pushed herself to her feet, giving her body a long stretch before leaving her room. She didn't know what the rest of her roommates had planned, but she didn't want to disturb them when most might be sleeping in on a Sunday. Awake or not, Laurie tried to be as quiet as she could going down stairs and stepping out the backdoor, grimacing a bit as it gave a soft squeak, " Why is it always squeaky at the worst time." She sighed softly, hoping it wasn't too loud before she began making her way towards the nearby woodlands. A quick stroll around the woods seemed better than nothing, even if the thick fog made it somewhat difficult to navigate. ' Maybe I should test have to navigate wind currents with limited sight range.' Laurie noted to herself. Yea, she could add that to her list of tests to work on, just...not right now. It wasn't long into her walk however did Laurie notice a shape through the fog, having to squint her eyes slightly to make out a person. Said person happened to be one of the other tenants of the boarding house, Adam. " Surprised to see someone else up this morning on a Sunday." Laurie greeted as she approached. Adam heard someone approach, someone that was much bigger than the occasional squirrel or bird that he had seen around the area, and he glanced up to notice one of his housemates coming closer to him. The blue skin stood out amid the browns and leftover-greens of the woodlands, allowing Adam to recognize Laurie. Considering he was laying in the grass, he was looking at his housemate upside-down, and it took him a moment to remember to speak when she was close enough to him.
"I could say the same," he admitted, slowly sitting up so he was leaning back on his elbows instead of flat on his back. "Olivia isn't a morning person. As far as I can tell, neither is Todd."
Adam's gaze turned to survey the woodlands around them, just enjoying the quiet. An autumn breeze ruffled the edge of the papers that were sticking out of the few textbooks that were on the ground, and Adam gave it an unimpressed look.
"Thought the quiet would help me concentrate on homework," he said. "It hasn't. Were you planning on doing some of your fitness training out here?"

" I've always been a morning person since I can remember, so nice to see another early riser." Laurie was use to being up early in the mornings, even among her own family. She always felt getting up early helped her to focus better and get more things done in the day, help her keep to her planned goals no matter how small they might be. It was nice to see someone else who was a morning person for a change. As the blue skinned teen went to take a seat near Adam, she took note of the textbooks spread out nearby and some of the loose papers hanging out the top. That would explain a lot. " Homework troubles, that's one way to ruin the weekend mood." Laurie mused, sitting crosslegged in the grass, taking in the cool fresh air despite the foggy morning. It was quiet and peaceful, perhaps not the best to help with concentration but it certainly helped with relaxing. Laurie herself wasn't always an outdoors kind of girl, but she had to admit from time to time it offered a sort of difference peace and serenity all its own, to take one's mind off the stresses of life. Or in this case, trying to focus on said stresses. " I'm sure you'll figure it out Adam." Though at his question, Laurie rubbed the back of her neck a bit, " Not really. I usually do a bit of practice with my abilities, get a better feel for how they work and what I can do." She answered, looking slightly embarrassed, " It's just...a touch embarrassing to use them with others around." But shrugged her shoulders, " Though given the fog, I'm also not eager to go crashing into several trees either while trying to fly." Tags: Golem, open

"I may not be as early of a riser as you when it gets colder," Adam admitted, a crooked smile fleetingly touching his face. He shrugged, somewhat to himself, and added, "I'm usually a light sleeper, though... Or used to be..."
It was something he had gotten used to when he ran with a gang.
"Yeah, I don't like it," Adam said regarding the homework. "Why do we have to bring work home? Isn't what we do in the classroom enough?"
Laurie explained a bit about her schedule with her abilities, and Adam blinked. "Why would it be embarrassing?" he asked, sounding honestly puzzled. "All of us here are mutants. I thought the point of being here was so we can be in a safe place as mutants. That's what the state's case worker said to me when she contacted Todd, anyway."
Then Laurie mentioned the fog, and Adam said, "Good point. Although with your practice, you'll memorize where the trees are soon enough, I'm sure."

Laurie returned Adam's smile, " Nothing wrong with liking to sleep in. I've just become a creature of habit." Most would probably look at Laurie oddly for her sleeping habits, and not necessarily because she was a walking crystal smurf. She had always been woken up early from the earliest time she could recall, her parents having jokingly told her she was up early even as a baby. Maybe it had just become hardwired into her since. " But I try to be quiet, promise." Though the red head briefly gave Adam a curious glance when he mentioned he use to be a light sleeper, wondering what had changed. But for the time being didn't pry. " Maybe we should just make a study group for the whole house." Laurie joked, though there was some slight truth in her words. Given they went to the same school it likely could help all of them get things done a lot faster even if they weren't all necessarily in the same grade. " Might give us more time to relax than stress. But then again, I read similar textbooks for fun, sooo probably not one to talk." Yea, that totally didn't make her sound lame at all... It was hard for Laurie not to express some curiosity now. " Case worker?" Laurie inquired. She wasn't a person to judge by any means, but she admittedly only knew a little about her housemates, the basics at best and nothing much about their backstories. Though she also knew many people were a little more private regarding their pasts. This was her first time really inquiring, wondering what had happened for Adam do need a case worker. Though in regards to her powers the young woman smiled meekly, " I train in the mornings because my abilities don't exactly require layers of clothing, they'd just be torn apart if I used them to their fullest. But if the situation calls for it then that's another story." Laurie picked at some of the dewey grass, " Just a little embarrassing is all." Though that was mostly Laurie's shyness talking. She definitely didn't share the charisma and confidence Adam and Olivia had, probably would help her in the long run if she had such confidence. Her smile quickly returned however, " Sure you're not a mind reader too Adam? Just had the same thought before I found you." Tags: Golem

"I suppose not," Adam said, agreeing with Laurie about there being nothing wrong with liking to sleep in. Being at the Brotherhood Boarding House, Adam found that he was actually allowed to sleep in and not have to worry about much. It was a novelty he was still getting used to.
He raised an eyebrow and gave Laurie a crooked smile when she mentioned a study group and the fact that she read textbooks for fun. Glancing at the books that he had with him outside, Adam said, "I wouldn't mind reading them for fun if the subjects interested me. It's like being able to read good books for the book club instead of whatever boring book is assigned in my English class. What kinds do you read?"
Laurie questioned his words about a case worker, and Adam shrugged. "I'm a ward of the state. Or of Todd now? I'm not quite sure how that works... I ran with a group of street kids after my mother died. Got caught. Went to juvie for a little bit until my case worker contacted Todd. Now I'm here."
It took Adam a moment to comprehend Laurie's explanation about why she trained early in the mornings and a dusting of red colored his cheeks. "Ah," he said simply and found interest in the trees. Laurie asked about him being a mind reader, and he shook his head.
"Nah, although Olivia wonders if I will be able to eventually read or talk to trees one day," he said. "She said I'd be like the Lorax, whoever that is..."
As the sun seemed to rise higher, Adam took that moment to gather his books and stand. "Working out here didn't help, apparently. I'll leave you to do your practicing. Good luck."
