Date: Thursday, September 7, 2023 Tag: Open! Words: 182 Notes: I don't have a specific time during the day in mind, so I suppose anyone with a connection to Bayville High could feasibly help Sierra. Sierra sneezed as she descended into the school's basement, the entrance to which was through a bulkhead by the storage shed that held many of the sports equipment. Flickering on the light switch, the overhead lamps were dim until she discreetly fed them just a bit more electricity. They shone steadily for a few minutes, allowing Sierra a brief look around.
Then the old bulbs burnt out, dying from overload despite how little electricity Sierra had used.
She sighed and brought out her cell phone to use the flashlight app. After the first day's ridiculous surprise of the cafeteria's and library's furniture being switched, Sierra had been informed by the school committee that there had been enough funds in the budget the previous year to buy more security cameras that were waiting to be installed at the principal's discretion.
Yet, if the cameras truly were down in the basement, Sierra had doubts as to how well they worked at this point.
"Feel free to shout if you see anything resembling a security camera," she said dryly to those who had joined her.

Words: 181 Tags: Gigabyte, open!"This place is disgusting," Todd muttered as he trudged into the basement behind Sierra. Coming from him, one can only imagine the state of the place. He heaved a sigh through his nose as the old bulbs burnt out and he took out a flashlight from his belt. Clicking it on, in response to Sierra's little cell phone flashlight app, he added, "Here, I got this one."
The beam shone brightly, showcasing the dust and cobwebs that decorated the basement. Of course, the cleanest spots in the basement were reserved for the more frequently-used sports equipment. "I'll, uh, put cleaning this place on my to-do list," Todd said. It'd be way down on the bottom of his to-do list, but he'd clean it eventually.
"Ya got no idea who switched all the furniture, eh?" he asked, going over to a corner of boxes and beginning to go through them. It wasn't the worst thing the faculty could have found on the first day of school, but it was a pain in the ass to move everything back to its proper place.

Tag: Toad, open! Words: 177 "Thank you," Sierra said when Todd brought out an actual flashlight. She kept her cell phone's flashlight app on, giving them just a touch more light, despite it not being as powerful.
"You may need to wear a hazmat suit," Sierra said dryly when Todd mentioned he'd put it on his to-do list to clean the place. "It should be a team effort. Perhaps the other custodians wouldn't mind helping, maybe even a few teachers or any students that want some credit for community service hours. I'll help as well."
Her nose wrinkled as her hand accidentally brushed through a cobweb.
Todd asked about whether or not Sierra had any idea as to who had switched the furniture and Sierra said, "Oh, I know the group of students who did it. They weren't quite as sneaky around the current security cameras, and seemed to not realize that the cameras also record audio. It would have been very helpful if the school committee remembered the brand of security cameras that were bought," she added as a near mutter.

Words: 197 Tags: Gigabyte, openTodd's hand touched something sticky and he grimaced as he pulled it away from the shelf and shook his hand as if he could get rid of the offending texture. "Don't mind doin' it myself," he said. He honestly didn't want to deal with any staff members who may or may not prefer that Todd existed.
Although, maybe he could get Adam to give him a hand if need be. Sierra would probably have a few kids willing to help out, too.
Todd raised an eyebrow at Sierra's back as she revealed that she knew exactly what group of students switched over the furniture. "Then what the hell are we looking for more security cameras for?" he asked.
"Are you not planning on callin' them out?" Todd then asked. "You gonna give them detention at the very least? What kids were they?"
And he was being completely nosy at this point, but he couldn't help it. If he did something like this back in high school -- and there was that device that made a lot of furniture just straight-up disappear; vaguely he wondered whatever happened to that -- Todd was sure he would get some sort of punishment.

Tag: ToadWords: 356 Todd mentioned that he wouldn't mind doing the cleaning himself, and Sierra wondered if that was just Todd or if there was an underlying motive as to why he didn't want anyone else around. Not a malicious motive -- he had yet to give Sierra a reason to suspect he wasn't doing his best in his position -- but perhaps a social one. Both Todd and Sierra knew there were other members of the faculty who weren't convinced hiring an out mutant as part of the staff was a good idea.
"It's a large job," Sierra chose to say. "I would rather it be cleaned with a team, just in case, although I appreciate your offer."
He seemed bewildered at the idea of finding the security cameras after she revealed that she already knew the students that had done the prank, and he peppered her with questions about the identities of the students.
"I wasn't planning on a public callout," Sierra admitted, peering into the nook of a particularly dark corner. "Rather, I'll discuss the incident with each student individually, maybe give a warning depending on the severity of the individual's participation, and tell each of their guardians as a courtesy. No one was hurt, at least, even if it was a bit of a chore moving all the furniture back.
I'm aware that my position is a little... delicate," she added. "I've been toying with what kind of reaction I allow the staff and students to see. Do I go the hard-ass route as the new principal, calling the students out, or do I take it in stride as an understanding principal who isn't going to stress out over harmless pranks? The latter also runs the risk of being seen as a pushover."
She looked back at Todd. "Of course, as one of the main staff members who had to right the roomfuls of furniture, I welcome your opinion on what to do."
Her cell phone's flashlight caught a glimpse of a few unopened boxes of cameras on a higher shelf, and she said, "I believe I found them. We may need to get a ladder, though..."

Words: 242 Tags: GigabyteTodd was a little disappointed that Teach wasn't planning on calling out the kids publicly, but he supposed he understood her reasonings. She seemed to be five steps ahead of the rest of the world when it came to planning and figuring out how Bayville High would perceive her as principal, something that Todd never had the luxury of doing himself.
With him, most folks figured what they saw is what they got. He usually proved them right. May as well not disappoint folks that already made up their minds about you.
Todd was surprised, though, when she ended her little spiel with asking him for his opinion on what to do with those students at fault. "I got nothin' to add to that," he said. "I know, if I was one of the kids doing that, I would have gotten at least detention. ...Not that I ever showed up for those.
"Your ideas sound fine to me," he added. "No skin off my nose. Movin' everything back wasn't too bad."
He held back a sneeze, not daring to disturb any of the dust and cobwebs any more than necessary. Fortunately, Teach seemed to find the security cameras and he used his stronger flashlight to confirm her findings. She mentioned something about a ladder, but he merely held the flashlight out to her.
"Nah, I got 'em," was all he said before leaping upwards and snatching the few boxes of security cameras from the shelves.

Tag: ToadWords: 171 Sierra raised an eyebrow back at Todd when he mentioned detention and how he never showed up for his own. Granted, detention was on the table for the students who had caused the mischief, but she was hoping that would be a last resort. Her first order of business would be to inform the students' guardians... One of whom was with her right now.
Todd didn't have anything further to add to the idea of a suitable consequence for the students, and he was able to grab the found security cameras rather effortlessly with his abilities. Sierra thanked him for getting the boxes, noting that despite them not being open, they were a little yellowed and discolored from being in a dirty environment for so long.
"Would you be opposed if the team I gathered to clean up this basement with you," Sierra said suddenly, "were the students who caused us to venture down here in the first place?"
Cleaning up the basement as community service may not be a bad idea.

Words: 197 Tags: GigabyteNow that the security cameras were found, Todd was more than ready to get the hell out of the basement. In fact, he turned to lead the way back to the stairs, but Sierra abruptly voiced the idea of having community service for the kids that had switched the furniture in the first place.
His shoulder sagged. "Seriously?" he lamented. "That'd just be an extended babysitting gig for me. Ya think any of those kids would actually listen to me and help with this place?" He gestured widely to their surroundings, the beam of the flashlight he had taken back bouncing around the dusty and dirtied nooks and crannies.
Even if Sierra was going to have another teacher or two with Todd to help clean and supervise, Todd was certain the other adults could be worse than the kids. Even the other couple of janitors at the high school weren't thrilled to have Todd as a co-worker, so he mainly kept his head down if he needed to deal with them.
After a moment, Todd did heave a sigh (and then coughed because of the dust) and added, "If ya really wanna do that, I got no choice, I suppose."

Tag: ToadWords: 236 Sierra wasn't sure whether to laugh or be utterly unimpressed by Todd's reaction to her idea that the pranking students be made to do community service. Rather, she supposed it wasn't community service that Todd was protesting against -- it was the fact that the students would be working with him.
"I would not have you be the only supervising adult," she assured him, gesturing for him to follow her out of the basement. He had paused in leading the way out because of her suggestion, so she maneuvered around him to take the lead herself. "Dealing with teenagers, especially ones prone to pranks, is a team effort. I would ask some of the other staff to help, and I would make myself available as well.
"If that's not something you'd be interested in," Sierra added, which it obviously was not, "then that's fine. It can be a project for the janitorial team instead."
Sierra took a deep breath of the fresh air once the pair made it out of the basement and she wrinkled her nose at getting an even better look at the unopened boxes. The poor security cameras deserved better than to be shoved in the back of some basement.
"With all that said..." Sierra looked back up at Todd. "One of the students is under your care. Would you like me to send you the informational email about it or just tell you now?"

Words: 204 Tags: GigabyteTodd rolled his eyes behind Sierra's back as she spoke and moved around him to lead the way out of the basement. He took a great leap over the stairs once she was out of the way and, in response to her mentioning that he would not be the only supervising adult, said, "That doesn't help if you're trying to convince me that this is a good idea. There aren't too many teachers around that are thrilled with my existence..."
Although, if Sierra was also there, then it probably would be fine in the end. He wasn't sure if there were any teachers willing to argue or defy the principal openly if they were all working together.
It probably didn't matter. Sierra took his response at face value and appeared to change her mind about having the pranking students help out for community service. She then threw Todd for another loop by mentioning that one of the students was actually under his care.
"Well, shit." Todd wasn't sure whether to be impressed or not. "Just tell me now. Which one is it? I only got two..." Personality-wise, it was probably Olivia. If Adam was coerced into doing it, though, his strength would have been welcomed to help.

Tag: ToadWords: 193 Notes: End thread after your response? Thanks for joining! "Has anyone been giving you trouble?" Sierra asked sharply when Todd mentioned that there were teachers around who weren't fond of his employment at the high school.
Sierra herself, of course, was well aware of that, but she had hoped no other member of the faculty -- or student body, for that matter -- would be so bold as to be rude to Todd's face. She wished the faculty would be tolerable of each other, at the bare minimum. They were all of the same team, after all.
The conversation was turned to the topic of the students themselves, and Sierra responded to him with, "Olivia Nolen. I don't quite believe she knew what she was getting into when she showed up here that night, but she went along with the idea anyway. Do what you will with that information."
She glanced back at the main buildings of the high school and said, "Thank you for venturing down there with me and helping to find the cameras. I'm going to bring these back to my office, see if it's viable, or possible, to actually put them connect them to the network. Have a good afternoon."

Words: 157 Tags: Gigabyte, just to see Notes: Thank you!Todd nearly crashed into Sierra's back when she sharply asked him about anyone giving him trouble. He blinked then shrugged. "Nah, nothing I can't handle," he said. Really, at this point, it was mainly dirty and distrustful looks. Nothing he wasn't used to from just living his life.
He just hoped it wouldn't escalate.
Sierra then mentioned that Olivia had been part of the group of students, and Todd nodded slowly. "I coulda guessed," he said, and really hoped that Sierra wasn't about to start grilling Todd on how he was planning on dealing with Olivia. He'd probably mention it to the kid, because that was probably something he was supposed to do as her guardian, but he highly doubted she'd listen if he tried grounding her or something.
"No problem," Todd said easily when Sierra thanked him for his help. "It's my job, ain't it?" He gave her a small salute as the pair parted ways.
