Date: Saturday, September 9, 2023 Tag: open! Words: 171 The cool air of September drove away the crowds from the beach, leaving it virtually empty after the heat waves of the past summer, and Roy was more than okay with that. He stood on the sand barefoot, his sneakers having been abandoned somewhere further up the beach, and was letting the ocean lap at his calves.
He smiled as he gestured with his fingers, making mini whirlpools in the waves. He was completely in his element, and his posture was utterly relaxed as he played with the water.
He left one hand to create the whirlpools while the other scooped up a handful of water to make a mini-ship. Carefully, he placed his creation back in the water and watched in amusement as the ship spun around in his whirlpool.
Roy took a deep breath, breaking the whirlpool and ship before another gesture created a liquid seal that delighted in diving through the water for Roy's enjoyment.
It was a shame that the institute's pool had closed for the season.

At least Bayville didn't seem too boring, despite how much smaller it was than the glamorous New York City. The mall and other shops were decent, the little restaurant district smelled pretty good (and there was that cute little cafe that would be a divine spot for a first date with a nice senior), and there was a touch of nature that the skyscrapers of New York City couldn't provide.
Olivia was especially thrilled with the open beach. At this time of the year, it was nearly deserted, with very few people out and about. There was a woman walking along the boardwalk with a small, fluffy dog that was (thankfully) quiet rather than of the yappy variety. An older man was trying to savor whatever youth he had by biking in the area. And way down by the waves with a young man, a teenager probably about her age, was staring serenely at the water.
Olivia smirked to herself, eyeing the boy while trying to decide if she should go over there and charm him. He didn't seem to be a jock, but was in decent shape nonetheless if his lean legs and arms were good indications. He was pale, and Olivia usually preferred her guys to have a bit of color on their cheeks, but maybe he wasn't the type to tan well. The navy-blue hair dye was kind of cool, though, and she appreciated a guy who was daring enough to stand out like that.
She decided to take a chance and, armed with a dazzling smile, she said above the waves, "Hello there! Mind if I join you?"

Tag: Mist, open! Words: 208 The liquid seal died, the form splashing softly as the water rejoined the waves, as Roy stiffened upon hearing a female voice call. He glanced up in the direction of the voice and looked around, hoping that the woman was not calling him. No such luck, unless she was speaking to an imaginary friend or a ghost. She came closer with a gorgeous smile, and Roy shoved his hands in the pockets of his cargo pants, doing his best not to drip.
He returned her grin with a small, closed-lipped smile of his own. "It's a public beach," he said amicably. "I'm not really doing much, though, so I don't know why you'd want to join me... I'm basically standing in the water to avoid getting sand stuck to me when I eventually go back up to the boardwalk."
She didn't seem to be too much older than he, if she was. Roy tried to recall if the young lady had been in any of his classes this past week, but he couldn't remember her at all. Hopefully she wasn't some crazy chick and was, instead, just a normal, beach-loving person who was friendly enough to strike up conversations with strangers. Like how Willow and Eddie were, really.

Oh he seemed shy, with his small smile and soft-spoken words. This was going to be fun.
Olivia laughed when the boy said he was avoiding getting sand stuck to his feet, and she tilted her head back, letting the wind blow her dark hair away from her bare neck. Most boys couldn't resist that move, especially when paired with her light blouse.
"I'm Olivia," she said, turning down her smile a watt or two, "Olivia Nolen. I just moved here from New York City a couple of months ago. I only got the chance to visit this beach a few times since then. Is this usually a popular spot? I can't wait until the warmer days come back. I'm not much of a winter girl."
Names and the weather seemed like a decent topic to get to know the cute boy more. He must go to the local high school, but she would remember if the pair were in a class together. Maybe they shared lunch and she hadn't noticed him yet, or if she was able to figure out what kind of after-school clubs he was in, maybe she'd try to join one. Of course, she shouldn't limit herself too soon. She didn't know how many other delicious-looking guys were at Bayville High.

Tag: Mist, open Words: 193 Roy blinked and raised an eyebrow in slight amusement at the girl laughing at his words. He hadn't particularly been trying to make a joke, but he wouldn't knock it, and he glanced back down at the water, wishing he could disappear into it, as the wind blew her long hair behind her.
"Um, Roy Kingsley," he said, introducing himself after she had done the same. She spoke easily about just moving to Bayville, the beach, and preferring summer to winter. To her questions, Roy could only shrug.
"Not sure about the crowd in the summer," Roy said. "I just moved here recently too. From Ohio. Didn't get much of a chance to really be here at the beach during the past couple of months... I don't mind the winter, actually. The heat and I don't get along."
He focused on the feel of the cold water swirling around his feet and ankles, half-wishing that he had gone back to the institute earlier when he had thought about it. Olivia seemed nice enough, but he wasn't good at small talk and knew from experience that his short answers could leave people feeling awkward.

Olivia bit the inside of her cheek to keep herself from frowning. Apparently, the seaweed-infested water was more interesting than she was, if Roy's attention span was any indication. It was a bit annoying, she'd admit, but she was never one to turn down a challenge. Perhaps he was a 'strong, silent type' who needed to take it slow. If anything, pursuing him would keep her occupied in high school.
She put her smile back on her face and didn't even need to feign interest in her voice. "All the way from Ohio?" she asked. "What brought you from there? Oh, did you come by car? Imagine how fun that road trip would be!"
Whenever Olivia got a car, she would definitely plan a road trip. Maybe to Mexico. Or Alaska.
"So, do you go to the local high school?" Olivia asked. "It seems we're both the new kids. I'm hoping it won't be too hard to catch up with Bayville's work load or social scene. Are you in any of the clubs?"

Tag: MistWords: 209 Roy looked back up at Olivia, his blue eyes wide as he speculated how to answer as to why he was here instead of Ohio. Oh, I'm here because I'm a mutant and I live with a bunch of others like me. Here, I'll demonstrate my abilities by diving into the sea and swimming away like a fish...
"Better school system," was the answer Roy settled on, figuring that it wasn't a lie. He chuckled lightly over Olivia's speculation about a long car ride like that, knowing that he would definitely have gotten sick had that been the mode of transportation. "Nah, I took a plane. I wouldn't do well in a car for that long."
She spoke of the high school, and he nodded. "Yeah, I'm a sophomore there, and still figuring things out. My classes didn't really do anything too heavy during the first week, which was nice." Roy took a deep breath, enjoying the scent and taste of the salty water. Olivia asked about clubs, and he said, "Uh, I was thinking of joining the swim team but ended up joining the debate team instead..."
Which was probably going to be a terrible idea, but he was also hoping it would help him grow a bit.

Olivia pursed her lips, listening to Roy's short responses and musing over what she could do with the information he revealed. It wasn't much, to be honest, but Olivia did well in working with what she had.
"We appear to be opposites," she said, amusement light in her voice as she gazed out at the sea. "I like summer, you don't. I would love to take a road trip, and you apparently aren't good friends with cars. You're not a traveler, huh?"
Roy spoke a bit more, and Olivia was pleased with herself, hoping that the young man was getting more comfortable. "A sophomore? I'm a junior." So, he was probably a year, maybe two, younger than her. That wasn't too bad. With a sly smile, she asked, "Is the swim team co-ed? Too shy to deal with that?
"So, wait..." Olivia's smile morphed into a smirk. "You're here at the beach and were planning on joining the swim team, but you like winter better than summer? You sound like a summer boy to me."

Tag: MistWords: 153 "No, not a traveler." Roy shook his head, his eyes gazing on the water again. He hoped he never would have to be a traveler. If all the words that the staff of the institute spout about being a family together are true, then maybe he wouldn't have to worry about that.
His blue eyes widened and he hated feeling the dusting of a blush on his cheeks. "Uh, co-ed? Pretty sure that boys and girls have separate swim teams." Why on earth would she ever think that? "Who would want that, anyway?"
Olivia then began to tease him about not being a summer type of guy, especially given his love of water. "Again, I don't do well with the heat. It's why I like the beach and the water... To swim."
Well, that sounded ridiculous. Olivia probably thought that he was already weird for just standing in the water in the fall.

Olivia did her best not to giggle or smirk at the blush that she saw rise on Roy's cheeks. The kid was cute, she gave him that. He also wasn't too bad of a conversationalist, but he could definitely stand to gain some improvement in that department.
She laughed lightly at his question regarding co-ed swim teams. "Oh, I can think of a few people who wouldn't mind that..."
Olivia stood up and dusted the sand off of her pants that had clung to her when she had sat down on the beach. With a friendly smile, she said, "I'll stop teasing you, though. You said you don't like the heat, and I don't want to get you too hot. Maybe come find me at school on Monday? I'd love to see you again, Roy."
On that note, she waved good-bye and made her way back up the beach, replaying the conversation over in her mind. At the very least, she appeared to have one acquaintance in the high school, someone who she could bounce questions and ideas off of if she found him in the hallways. Roy did say he was fairly new himself, but that was a common ground that the two had between them, something to unite them together. Olivia was sure she could use it to her advantage somehow.
