The house was getting too stuffy for Wyatt, and it wasn't just the heat. It was barely the beginning of August and Wyatt's uncle was already talking about Wyatt's next year of high school.
Wyatt was fine. He got his schedule already -- not the best classes, but they were decent and good enough for Wyatt -- but his uncle kept gabbing as if Wyatt already had tests scheduled. He understood his uncle just wanted the best for him, but Wyatt still needed to escape the house for a little while and opted to take a long walk.
He glanced through the window of one of the convenience stores on the block, digging through his pocket for some change for a drink. He didn't quite have enough, not having thought he'd be out of the house this long. Convenience stores didn't have sales too often, did they? The cashier on this afternoon wasn't the nice old lady that probably would have looked away if Wyatt was really short some change for a bottle of water.
Maybe the cashier on duty wouldn't notice Wyatt take a bottle... It was only a couple of bucks, right? The store wouldn't miss that. (Wednesday, August 9, 2023 - open)

Olivia was lost.
She wasn't worried in the slightest. Bayville wasn't too big of a city -- especially after coming from a place like New York City -- and Olivia was certain she'd eventually find her way back to the Brotherhood Boarding House. If not, well, she'd give Todd a call. That was his job, right? To make sure she got home safely, even if it meant coming to pick her up from wherever?
Hell, she could probably ask any Bayville townie for directions and they would oblige. Most Bayville people that she's met so far seemed nice enough. And if someone wanted to give her trouble, she was adept at giving it right back.
Walking down the sidewalk, looking as if she knew where she was going, Olivia figured she should find some poor sucker to try asking directions from. Someone unassuming, someone that didn't have too many other folks around to eavesdrop...
Someone like the teen just staring longingly through a convenience store window.
Olivia quirked an eyebrow and slowed her steps down, looking into the window as well. She didn't see anything special -- although the cashier didn't look too bad, in a haven't-shaved-in-a-week way -- and asked the other teen beside her, "What are we looking at?"

Wyatt had jumped when he heard a voice next to him, and he looked over to see a pretty brunette standing by him and also looking through the convenience store window.
Like, a really pretty brunette. What the hell was she doing talking to him?
"Uh, nothing, really," Wyatt said. "I was just trying to figure out if I had enough money for a bottle of something before actually walking in there."
He didn't want to walk in, find out he was short money, and then walk out empty-handed. That would have been embarrassing.
Wyatt glanced back at the girl, trying not to stare or be rude, but he was trying to figure out if he knew her from the high school or something. Someone like her would probably be on some sort of school team and would want to be known, if the way she was had no fear in talking to strangers was any indication.
He could also just totally be looking into this too much.
"Sorry, but do you go to the high school?" Wyatt asked, taking the plunge. "I feel like I should know you." ( Mist, open!)

Oh. The reason why the other teen was staring into the store was rather boring.
"I'll be starting at Bayville High next month," she said. "I'm going into my junior year. I'm hoping I won't be spending my only and last two years of high school trying to fit into high school, you know? Hopefully, I'll be able to find a nice classmate or two to help me..."
Olivia's other eyebrow joined her first momentarily as she also looked into the convenience store through the window. Thoughtfully, she hummed. "That's too expensive for a bottle of water anyway," she said dismissively. "Give me a few minutes... I'll give you a signal to come in."
With a flip of her hair, Olivia walked into the convenience store and cast the cashier a grin when he looked up at her. He returned it briefly (too briefly, in her opinion) before looking back at his phone. Olivia wondered if she could have walked right out with a couple of bottles of water right then and there, but the cashier would remember her face. Regardless, she not-so-accidentally stuck the door open, ensuring whoever entered or exited next would not cause the little bell above the door to jingle.
"Excuse me," Olivia went to the side of the counter, not wanting to block the cash register itself, and gave the cashier a sheepish smile. "I'm a little lost. Is asking for directions free or shall I buy something...?"
With the cashier's attention on her, Olivia used one hand to point towards the Google map the cashier had on his phone while the other gave her waiting friend outside a small wave to indicate he should come in. It would be his decision if he really wanted a bottle of water.

Okay, he got confirmation that he did not know the lady in front of him, which made him feel a little better. Because, honestly, if someone like her had been at Bayville High and he hadn't noticed, Wyatt would be worried that he went blind.
Before Wyatt could volunteer to be that friend who would gladly show her around Bayville High when school started up again, she told him to wait a minute until she gave him a signal to go into the convenience store. She sauntered in and Wyatt tried not to be confused as he watched her.
She went right up to the cashier, positioning herself in a way that held the cashier's attention away from the stash of bottled water. Wyatt noticed her waving to him and it took him an embarrassingly long few seconds to realize he could slip in through the open door without the cashier noticing him.
As long as he didn't trip on his own feet or anything.
Keeping his head down and his gaze only glancing over occasionally at the cashier and brunette, Wyatt walked quietly over to the bottled water, grabbed a couple, and was slipping back out the door and walking down the sidewalk a little ways before realizing that, holy shit, he just stole a couple of water bottles.
...It was kind of exhilarating. ( Mist, open)

She nodded along with the cashier's attempts at giving her directions, the guy using Google maps to try to show her where to go. He kept swiping the screen in the wrong directions, but she pretended to follow along anyway. After a few moments, Olivia looked up at the cashier with a smile and said, "I think I got it now. Thank you so much! Hope the rest of your day goes well."
And she slipped out the front door without looking back at him.
She was confident as she turned down the sidewalk, rejoining the other teen within a few seconds. She kept walking, gesturing for him to keep up, and said, "Aw, you got me a water, too. Thank you."
Taking the extra bottle the teen had taken, Olivia quenched her thirst as the pair kept going down the street. "And that kid in there sucked at giving directions," she said, "even with a map literally in front of him. You know where the library is from here?"
Not that Olivia really wanted to get to the library, but she knew more of the area around the building than where she was now.
"Olivia Nolen, by the way," she mentioned off-handedly as the pair continued to walk. "What grade you in at Bayville High? I wonder if we'll see more of each other on a regular basis."

She thanked him for the water bottle, not batting an eye at the fact that they were just nonchalantly walking down the sidewalk with stolen items.
"You've done this before," he said quietly, still a bit bewildered at what had just happened.
"Uh, yeah, I know where the library is," he answered, then gestured vaguely down the sidewalk they were on and motioned somewhere to the right. They were semi-walking towards it, at least.
Then she gave him her name, which sounded as pretty as she was, and Wyatt said, "I'm Wyatt Kelly. A sophomore. I don't know if we'll cross paths at the high school regularly..."
Which both sucked and was probably a good thing. If he had gone along with her this easily for just a couple of water bottles (even if, yes, he had been kind of thinking the same thing but he knew he would have chickened out on his own) he wasn't quite sure what he would do with her regular influence. She winked in response to the other kid's reaction to her not being new to shoplifting, opting to believe that he sounded rather in awe at the fact. She would neither confirm nor deny his statement, especially since he seemed to be trying to take it in stride and continued walking with her supposedly toward the library.
Wyatt Kelly the kid's name was, and he revealed that he was going to be a sophomore at the high school. Olivia hummed, trying to decide if she was interested or not, but did say, "'Fraid I'm mostly in classes that are catered to juniors. Think Geometry is also a sophomore class. Fourth period for me. Otherwise, we may be relegated to just waving at each other as we pass in the hallways."
Which wouldn't be the worst thing for Olivia. Considering how meek (even though he did succeed in his part of taking the water bottles; he scored points for that) Wyatt seemed, he probably wouldn't be great for her social life.

And she winked at him when he stated that she wasn't new to shoplifting, and he wasn't sure how to feel about that. She didn't seem to regret her actions in the slightest, and his mind began running wild as he began to think about what else she may have shoplifted in her life. Water bottles weren't much, no one was going to miss a couple... but just how big of jobs has she lifted before?
It was intriguing, he could admit that to himself.
Olivia revealed that she was mostly in junior-orientated classes, which made perfect sense, but Wyatt latched onto her math class. "Oh, hey, I'm in geometry fourth period, too. Maybe we'll be in the same class."
Because Wyatt decided that he wanted to get to know Olivia better. She represented the opposite of his home life and, considering the argument he had with his uncle this morning, Wyatt wanted just that. ( Mist)

Olivia smirked to herself, feigning interest in the window displays of the shops they passed by upon realizing that she may have flustered the little sophomore. He sounded a little too eager when it was revealed that they shared the same math class period, and Olivia had mixed feelings about it.
Oh, God, she hoped that this kid wouldn't get a crush on her.
Maybe he wasn't that naive, though. Maybe he was just riding high on the thrill of shoplifting, however meager the prize had been.
"If we are in the same class, then at least I'll have someone to get the answers to the homework from," Olivia said casually. She downed some more of her water bottle before noticing the library off in the distance.
Huh, look at that. They actually made it.
"Guess you were much better with directions than whoever the cashier was," Olivia said. "Thanks again. Probably see you around Bayville High." She waved at Wyatt over her shoulder and continued onward herself.
