It was rather ridiculous. Why would he, Isaac Bates, one of the best football players Bayville High School has seen in years, need to try out for the football team again?
He should be used to it, this being the third time he was going out for the sport, but he honestly believed that if a player had already tried out and gotten on the team two years in a row, he should automatically be on the team the next year if he wanted. Even the coach seemed exasperated at the idea of making all of the upperclassmen try out for the team again.
Seriously, what were the odds of enough superstar freshmen players coming onto the team that would threaten the coach to make cuts? There were usually enough seniors that had graduated to accommodate incoming freshmen, but apparently the school board liked making teens run around in the dead of summer to try out for sports teams in the name of giving everyone a fair chance.
Isaac heaved, taking deep, measured breaths as he waited on the sidelines for the coach to instruct potential newbies to the team. Isaac had already done a couple of exercises for the coach, ones that he was sure didn't really matter, and he would probably be used as an example for other players.
He glanced around the field, wondering if any other sports teams were trying out today or if there were just some nerds that were trying to get a headstart on figuring out where their classes would be for the upcoming school year.

Mason didn't understand football. He didn't like the idea of chasing a ball around only to get absolutely tackled into the dirt by someone who weighed twice as much as him. Mason probably had the speed to make it onto that team, but he wasn't keen on getting knocked around.
Instead, Mason refocused on the track coach. The coach was going on about teamwork and the relays and the sprints, the different lengths of races that the Bayville High team participated in on a regular basis, and Mason wished he would hurry up. He didn't mind the heat, but he was doing his damnedest not to scratch the back of his neck or arms. Mason was certain he would start to shed some of his skin.
That's all he needed to happen around his potential new teammates.
The coach eventually stopped talking and picked a few of the other incoming students to start racing around the track. Mason stepped off of the bleachers, stretching his own limbs as he waited for his turn.

It took Isaac a few minutes to realize that the football team was sharing the field with the track team. Rather, he supposed the track team was using the track (duh) around the field, and he watched with vague interest as the track coach instructed a good chunk of the team to start their own practice.
One of the track kids that wasn't running at the moment was nearby, stretching his own limbs just as Isaac had been occasionally doing. Isaac didn't recognize him, but he hadn't been part of the little group of freshmen that had arrived at the edge of the field at the beginning of these try outs. Still, the other kid looked to be in decent shape. Not football player shape, of course, not enough muscle on him, but still the athletic type.
"Trying out for a different sport this year?" Isaac asked the kid, trying to figure out where the kid fit in. Isaac thought he knew the majority of the athletes at the high school.

It took Mason a few minutes too long to realize that he was being spoken to by one of the football players.
"New sport?" Mason's brows furrowed in confusion before coming to the conclusion that the football player probably didn't realize that Mason was new to the school. He at least correctly deduced that Mason wasn't a freshman, at any rate. "Oh, no, I'm new to Bayville High this year. Hoping that track will be my sport. I was lucky enough to run into another student earlier in the month who told me how the try outs work."
He would have to find Gina at some point and thank her for the advice. Mason had been able to ask his mother if she could keep an ear out for the sports teams' try outs, and she had obliged. In fact, his mother had even gotten the news before it had gone up on the school's website then promptly asked Mason why he didn't just ask Sierra.
Mason had sheepishly admitted that he had kind of forgotten that he had lived with his principal.
"Mason Perez, gonna be a junior," Mason said, introducing himself to the football player. "You look like you're too used to football to need to try out."

The other teen's brows furrowed and seemed confused for some reason at Isaac's simple question. Comprehension dawned on the other kid's face as Isaac slowly raised an eyebrow before explaining that he was new to Bayville High this year.
"Ah, gotcha." Isaac nodded. "Yeah, the tryouts are kind of weird, especially if you've already been on a team for a year or two." His words were loud enough for the football coach to hear, making the coach glance at Isaac with a dry look before returning his watchful gaze to a couple of incoming freshmen trying to tackle each other. Isaac chuckled. "Sometimes I don't think the coaches like doing it, either.
"You got that right," Isaac agreed when the newly-introduced Mason commented that Isaac himself seemed too used to football. "I've been one of the star players since I was a freshman. Like you, I'm going into my junior year. Isaac Bates."
He shook hands with Mason as he introduced himself and asked, "Since we'll both be juniors, think we'll have any of the same classes? You don't have to take any underclassmen classes to catch up, I hope?"

The other teen probably thought Mason was a bit of an idiot if his facial expression was any indication as Mason's brain caught up with what Isaac was asking. They both seemed to be on the same page after Mason explained he was new to Bayville High.
The football player agreed the way the tryouts worked was kind of weird, talking loud enough for his coach to overhear (and look a little disgruntled and done with hearing these kinds of complaints) and making Mason chuckle. "I guess it's just to make sure everyone has a fair shot," Mason said with a small shrug.
Isaac introduced himself as well, and Mason was glad that he wasn't trying out for the football team. Being a self-proclaimed star player, Isaac seemed more confident than arrogant, but Mason still didn't want to get on his bad side as a new kid to the school.
"No, no underclassman classes, thankfully," Mason said. "I'm caught up with my transcript. Just have to navigate through a new school, that's all.
"I got some of the typical classes," Mason continued. "English Literature III, chemistry, geometry... My electives are Spanish II and weight training, if you're in either of those?"

"Yeah, I suppose," Isaac agreed, watching the other new kids on both teams. There was a promising-looking new kid trying out for the football team, actually. Tall, a little skinny right now but would be able to pack on the muscles, coming into the high school as a junior like Mason. Coach seemed to really like him -- Alex or Adam or something like that -- and Isaac figured part of it was due to how easily the new kid took directions. He didn't mind tackling anyone else or playing opposition to be tackled. Isaac brought his mind back to the conversation, saying, "Still maintain those of us who have been on the team should have our spots no matter what."
Mason mentioned that he would just need to basically navigate a new school, and Isaac said, "Bayville High can be pretty straight forward. We got a couple of different buildings, but you'll learn which ones are for maths and sciences, and which are for languages and history, all that stuff. Most of the student body and teachers won't mind pointing you in the right direction, either."
The other kid rattled off his classes, and Mason slowly shook his head. "I take weight training," he said. "Third period, I think it will be for the upcoming year. You?"

Mason felt a little relieved (not that he noticed he was nervous at all about starting a new school until that moment) when Isaac began speaking about how Bayville High wasn't too bad to navigate and, if Mason had trouble, seemed confident that the student body and faculty themselves would be willing to lend Mason a hand.
"I certainly hope so, but that's good to hear," Mason said. He gave Isaac a crooked grin and added, "Especially since my mother is part of the faculty. If you have Noelle Perez for any of your English classes, that's my mom. She's why we're here in Bayville, actually."
Mason also had the inside track of living with the principal of the high school, but he wasn't quite sure how common that knowledge was supposed to be. As such, he kept his mouth shut.
Despite both of them being juniors, Isaac was shaking his head slowly when Mason started listing off his classes. It made sense that Mason, being the new kid, had a lot of the basic junior classes while Isaac, with a more established high school career at Bayville, probably was in more advanced classes. It did sound like they had at least one class in common, though.
"Hey, third period is my weight training period, too," Mason said. "Think it'd be the same class, or would Bayville have more than one weight training class happening at the same time?" Mason had no idea what the gym areas of the high school looked like.

Isaac grinned when Mason revealed that his mother was part of the faculty. With a chuckle, Isaac said, "Don't remember which teacher I have for English literature, but if it's your mother, I got an in, right? If need be, I can drop your name to maybe get out of trouble if I ever find myself in it?"
Truth be told, Isaac wasn't a bad student, but literature classes weren't high on his list of priorities. Considering he had English lit class last period for the upcoming school year, he was aiming to find a seat in the back of the room and do his homework during it. If he did have Mason's mother as a teacher, he hoped she wouldn't be too much of a hard-ass.
"Sweet," Isaac said when Mason revealed that his weight training class was third period. "That's when mine is, so it's probably the same one. Bayville High has one weight section in the gym, so there wouldn't be two happening at the same time."

200 words | Isaac Bates | Figured this would be a decent ending. Thank you! It was Mason's turn to laugh when Isaac asked about having an in if his teacher was Mason's mother.
"'Fraid not, man," Mason said. "She'd probably think I'd corrupted you or something. Drop my name and you'll probably get into even more trouble."
In between the coaches of both teams blowing their whistles and shouting out orders to the athletes, Isaac also mentioned that Bayville High only had one weight room in the gym so there was a damn good chance that the pair would see each other in their weight training class.
"Sounds good to me," Mason said. "I'm looking forward to knowing someone at least in one of my classes."
Mason's attention was momentarily snatched when the track coach began lining up some of the other students trying out for positions on the team, and Mason figured he should probably be part of it. "Guess we should probably go back to the real reason we're here on this field," Mason said. "It was good to meet you, Isaac. I'll see ya around!"
With that, Mason jogged back over to the track team, getting there in time for the coach to direct him to one of the lanes on the track.
