Mya honestly loved the mall in any shape or form, but it could definitely be a pain in the summer season. With the promise of air conditioning, it was a haven against the hot weather for all teens not stuck with summer day jobs. With the large food court and a healthy variety of shops, many could spend the entire day at the mall without getting bored.
Mya was usually one of those people, but she had honestly been stuck behind enough slow-moving people and stupid cashiers to really want to spend too much longer at the mall. It was a bit disappointing, really. She had planned on doing her back-to-school shopping and, while she had found a couple of cute skirts and a shiny new pair of heels, she was nowhere near done. She was taking a small break in the food court, sipping on a fruit smoothie from some new fro-yo place that had just opened this summer and people-watching. She recognized most of the teens from school and had even found a few friends, but she hadn't felt like sticking around with them while shopping.
Vaguely, Mya wondered if there was any interesting new blood for Bayville this coming school year. Bayville could use some new faces to liven the place up. (Tuesday, August 15, 2023 - open)

Tag: Nightcrawler:serrano, open Words: 251 Willow figured she should let her debit card cool down a little. Usually she wasn't the type of teenage girl to go crazy while shopping, but there was something about back-to-school sales that made her weak. She hoped that her parents wouldn't mind how much she spent since she was planning on donating most of last year's wardrobe to a few of her parents' charities. She shrugged to herself, figuring that the worst thing that could happen would be her parents calling and demanding that she return some of her purchases. It wouldn't be too big of a deal, even if Willow did really like what she had picked out for the coming school year.
"Excuse me!" Willow had been apologizing to people almost all day from bumping them with her bags. The mall was so crowded, not that she was too surprised with the heat and the sales going on. Soon enough she made her way to the food court and, after a brief delay to make her decision, went straight to the kiosk that sold cupcakes and milkshakes. She got a vanilla milkshake to wash down her chocolate mousse cupcake before turning to try to find a seat amid the lunch crowd.
After a few minutes, Willows spotted a table that, despite having an occupant, had a free seat. With a smile, Willow went up to the other teenager and said, "Hello! Do you mind if I join you? There aren't too many other free seats. I'm Willow."

Mya almost didn't even realize that someone was talking to her. The place was so crowded that she had been tuning out other people's conversations in an effort to figure out what else she still needed to get for the start of the next school year. She still needed to hit up her favorite make-up store...
"Sure, knock yourself out." She vaguely gestured to the seat across from her for the other teen, scrutinizing the other girl. She introduced herself and sat down with her totally fattening snack. Mya raised an eyebrow at the cupcake and milkshake combo, wondering how the other teen was so damn small.
"Mya Serrano," Mya said, figuring she may as well be polite and give her name as well. Looking at all of the bags that Willow had, she asked, "You doing back-to-school shopping, too? You at the, uh, middle school?"
Willow looked young enough to be at the middle school, at any rate. Although, if she was, Mya vaguely wondered if Willow was supposed to have some adult supervision... ( Critter, open)

Tag: Nightcrawler:serrano Words: 196 "Thanks," Willow said as she took the seat across from Mya, and took a small sip of her thick milkshake. She preferred chocolate, but that would have been a bit too much with her cupcake, even for someone like Willow. With a gesture to her cupcake, Willow asked, "Would you like some? It's chocolate mousse!"
Willow took a moment to rearrange her bags and purchases by her seat, double-checking to be sure that no one else would end up tripping over her bags. Glancing at Mya's bags, she said, "Yep, this is all back-to-school shopping. I'm not the type to spend so much time at the mall, but this is probably one of my favorite times of the year to shop besides the holidays with all the sales going on. Kind of feel bad for the cashiers and workers, though. I'm sure these sales can be stressful for them. Did you have good luck with the sales?"
She did chuckle a little when Mya asked whether Willow was in the middle school. "Actually, I'll be a freshman at the high school. I'm guessing you go to Bayville High? Any advice for a newer student like me?"

Mya raised an eyebrow as Willow offered her a bite of the cupcake and, after a small pause, Mya shrugged and said, "What the hell, why not?" She snatched a plastic fork from one of the many little kiosks around that held the plastic utensils, napkins, and condiments, before taking a bite.
She hummed appreciatively. "That is good. Is it from that new dessert place right there?" she asked, using her fork to point to one of the food court places. There was one in particular that boasted cupcakes, cakes, and a few flavors of ice cream.
Mya stole one more bite before putting her fork down, not wishing to take more than her fair share, and listened as Willow spoke quite a bit about the school sales and feeling back for the poor cashiers. Mya didn't quite share that sentiment considering dealing with people was what the cashiers got paid for, but Willow kept on talking and mentioned that she would actually be a freshman at the high school.
"Yeah, I'm going to be a junior," Mya said, feeling a bit bewildered that the little girl in front of her was old enough to be at the high school. "Bayville High isn't too bad, I guess, although I heard that there's a new principal coming in. I dunno what kind of changes they'll make." ( Critter, open)

Tag: Nightcrawler:serrano Words: 206 Willow grinned when Mya took a bite of the cupcake and hummed. Nodding, Willow said, "Right?! I can't get enough of that place. Pretty sure I've been there, like, four times this summer already. Last time I didn't need anything else at the mall. I came just for the cupcakes!" When asked, Willow pointed out the shop in the foot court that made the cupcakes, confirming Mya's thought.
Mya took another bite while Willow washed down her own with her milkshake, and Mya spoke casually about Bayville High. "A junior? Is that the year you'll be doing all the college applications? I remember when my sisters had to do all those. They're both twins, a few years older than me. One of them was constantly stressed about it while the other basically shrugged through the process, only applying to a few places."
Then Mya wondered aloud about the changes that may be coming to the high school, and Willow wasn't quite sure if she should mention that she was living with the new principal.
"I'm sure everything will be fine," Willow said. "I mean, the new staff coming in will have to see how the old staff made everything work, right? Any changes may take time."

Mya tried not to seem too bewildered when Willow admitted that she had visited the cupcakery place in the food court several times throughout the summer already. Willow was probably one of the smallest people she had ever met. Where in the hell did Willow put away all of those calories?
Maybe Willow was one of those really active kids. Mya may see Willow on one of the many sports teams Bayville High boasted about.
"I'm hoping I can control myself," Mya said, "if only to save on some of the money. I swear, this mall's prices go up every year."
Willow continued to chat, taking any opening Mya gave her and running with it. "Yeah, college apps this year, although I did a couple at the end of last year to get ahead of the game," she said. "It's all so annoying, in my opinion. I hope your sisters were fine with them, even if at least one of them was super stressed out.
"Did they just recently graduate Bayville High?" Mya asked. "Maybe I knew them if they were there the past couple of years."
Mya huffed out a chuckle under her breath when Willow mentioned that she was sure the new principal would be fine. "Hold onto that optimism as long as you can in high school," was all Mya said. ( Critter open)

Tag: Nightcrawler:serrano Words: 176 "Yeah, the prices in the mall can be annoying," Willow agreed. "I think that's why I enjoy sales so much. My only problem is that I end up spending more during sales than I would if everything was just full price!"
Willow hadn't really thought about college applications for herself -- after all, it was still a few years away for her -- but she didn't think she was looking forward to it too much after seeing her sisters go through it and with the way Mya was talking. "You'd think the process would be a bit more streamlined," Willow said. "I mean, universities are supposed to want you to join their schools, right?"
She shook her head when Mya asked about when her sisters had graduated. "No, it's been about five years since they graduated," Willow said. "That, and they didn't go to Bayville High. They went to Paramount School, that boarding school right outside New York City?"
Then Mya made a comment about Willow's optimism, and Willow gave Mya a crooked smile. "I'll do my best."

Mya gave Willow a crooked smile when the younger of the two commented about the money she spent. "That's how they get ya, right?" Mya said. "Seriously, they probably jack prices up to put those on 'sale' so it makes the sale price the same as it would be at full price. Gotta make the prices look good."
She nodded along with Willow regarding the college process. "You would think they want us there," Mya said dryly. "After all, we're paying them to go to their so-called prestigious halls." Speaking of prestigious, Mya raised an eyebrow when Willow spoke of her sisters and the school they had gone to (and the age gap -- Mya wondered if Willow was an oops baby).
"So, wait." Mya took a second to get her thoughts in order. "Your sisters didn't go to Bayville High? Paramount School is a nice high school. Why aren't you going there?"
This was a bit odd. Judging by Willow's clothes and the stores that her bags were from, not to mention the fact that she just namedropped one of the best private high schools around, it seemed she came from money. Why would Willow be slated for a public high school instead of following in her sisters' footsteps? ( Critter, open)

Tag: Nightcrawler:serrano Words: 186 Notes: End thread? Thank you! Willow conceded to Mya's words both about stores' sale prices and universities. She wasn't quite as prepared for Mya's curiosity regarding her sisters going to Paramount School while Willow was slated for Bayville High School.
Whoops. Willow wasn't quite sure where to go from there. Admitting to living at the Xavier Institute wouldn't be the best idea. While mutants themselves weren't a secret in the world, Willow could very well be outing herself if she tried explaining that it was her living situation that had prompted the decision for her to go to Bayville High rather than the Paramount School.
"It was my decision," Willow settled for saying, giving Mya a smile. "I was enrolled to go to the Paramount School," which wasn't a lie, "but I wanted the experience of a big, public school. You may think I'm crazy, but I wanted to be part of the public school system."
She paused and polished off the rest of her cupcake. "With that said, I should probably finish up my shopping. It was great to meet you, Mya. I'll see you around school, if not sooner!"
