Tuesday, July 18, 2023 | 211 words | @thyreophora | Please let me know if anything seems off/you want me to edit for Corrine's first appearance! Bobby should definitely be more excited (and maybe a little nervous) about meeting a new recruit than flying the Blackbird. He would only admit to himself that he jumped at the chance to go to Alaska because he would be able to give the jet a good spin.
Maybe the potential new recruit would enjoy the jet, too. Bobby could share plenty of stories of his experiences with the Blackbird from his teenage years, from the flight simulation in the Danger Room to the joyride he and a few others took--
Maybe he'd start with a safety lecture.
The ride didn't take too long at all, and Bobby soon found himself contacting air traffic control to get permission to land at the airport. He coasted into a private strip, glad that Sierra or Kurt had arranged such a thing, and Bobby got a rented car to make the short drive to the Burns' house.
Or, rather, boat.
"Where is the Snow Bird...?" Bobby muttered to himself, glancing at the names of the docked boats. He found it eventually and, carefully, Bobby made his way to what he guessed was the front door and knocked a few times.
He hoped he'd be a good enough introduction to the Xavier Institute for the Burns family.

The boat in question was a 45' puget trawler boat, a white and gray fishing boat with wooden trim that was well kept yet worn from visible use over the years. The vessel was not hard to miss among the many sail boats, fishing boats, and personal cruising vessels, especially with the big blue wording of "Snow Bird" on the back of the boat that likewise served as the main entrance and a snowbird stain glass window in the wooden door. A sizable vessel for a small family like the Burns family. One such member of the Burns clan could be heard moving within, tending to some last minute clean up of their floating home. Danielle had taken time off that day from her day job for the occasion. From the call she had gotten some days prior, they were expecting someone from the Xavier Institute to arrive to meet them to go over some necessary information, someone who would have a better idea of what her daughter was going through and to help her. After everything they had gone through at this point, a fresh start seemed the best option. Before long, the much awaited knock came. Moving to the sliding wooden door, the woman slid the door aside and was met by a man perhaps a few years younger than herself. " Hello, you must be from the Xavier Institute." Danille greeted with a welcoming smile, offering a welcoming handshake towards Bobby as she spoke, " I'm Danielle Burns, Corrine's mother." She introduced herself. Tags: Iceman

159 words | @thyreophora The door slid open within a few moments and Bobby greeted the answering woman with a warm smile.
"Hello, it's a pleasure to meet you," he said, returning the handshake with his own. "My name is Robert Drake. Feel free to call me Bobby. I'm one of the instructors at the Xavier Institute." He paused for a second, his smile turning crooked. "Forgive me, it's a little strange to me still to be on the other side. I actually grew up at the Xavier Institute as a student myself years ago, so I'm confident I can answer any questions that you or Corrine may have about being a student."
That sounded like a good introduction, right? Bobby was confident he could answer any questions the family may have, and he did his best not to be nervous at all.
Gesturing around the boat, Bobby said, "This is awesome, by the way. The idea of living on a boat is pretty cool!"

" It's a pleasure to meet you as well Bobby, please come in." Danielle stepped aside to allow the young man to come in, the interior looking more like a small house within. It was a small living space, but enough for a small family like the Burns. Leaving the sliding door open for now, Danielle listened intently as Bobby explained a bit of his own background with the institute, looking a little more relaxed knowing he had prior experience in his youth. There were still a number of questions she had going through her head, but she figured it was best to focus on the more importance questions instead of bombarding the poor man. He was nice enough to come all this way, so she didn't want to waste all his time. Though, speaking of time..." I have a few questions myself Bobby, but before we begin...Corrine! We have a guest!" The older woman called. Her call was answered with movement below deck, a soft grunt coming from the teenager followed by a faint "ow!" as she bumped her head on the closet, digging out the last bit of her things as she was already spending some of those days packing. Lightly rubbing the top of her head, Corrine made her way up the wooden steps into the kitchen/living room area, " Whose this?" The teenager inquired, her shyness kicking in with a stranger around and hanging back a little. It was hard not to be apprehensive around strangers for her, especially with her mutation being so prominent now. " This is Bobby Corrine, he's from the institute I was telling you about." Her mother answered, hoping to ease her daughter's apprehension. It seemed enough for Corrine's shyness to turn to genuine curiosity. She recalled a little about what her mother had found about this institute, which was all the way on the opposite side of the country in New York. " Wait, does that mean you're like me, a mutant?" She inquired. Tags: Iceman

182 words | @thyreophora "Thank you," Bobby said graciously, stepping into the boat's interior and marveling at how it was decorated and reminded him of a small house or apartment. It was cozy and looked perfect for a small family.
"Absolutely," Bobby said when Ms. Burns mentioned that she had questions. "Fire away whenever you are ready."
The missus of the house -- boat? -- called her daughter over, Corrine. Corrine would be the new recruit in question should the pair fully agree to Corrine going to Bayville. The teenager appeared and Bobby smiled in greeting.
"Hi," he said when Ms. Burns introduced him to Corrine. He reached over for a handshake, saying, "Pleasure to meet you.
"Yep, genuine mutant," he answered when Corrine asked. "My main ability is cryokinesis. I do stuff with ice and usually make puns about being a cool dude. Everyone at the Xavier Institute is a mutant like us. As I mentioned to your mother, I also grew up at the institute and found my way back there after college to help out. Any questions either of you ladies have, I'm all ears."

" Glad to meet you too." Corrine greeted with a faint smile as she returned his handshake, her shyness for the moment forgotten. Hearing what Bobby could do though had Corrine's eyes widen slightly, " You can control ice..." Corrine repeated, " Now that sounds badass." But before she could dive into her own unrelated questions a soft clearing of the throat from her mother made Corrine realize they were getting off topic. For now Corrine decided to hold back her own inquires as Danielle took back over the conversation. " As happy as I am you two are already hitting it off, we should probably get to the main reason you're here Bobby." The older woman spoke, looking more amused than annoyed. She seemed thrilled to see her daughter come out of her shell for a bit, but there were more important matters they had to address first, mostly regarding the institute itself. Corrine could understand why her mother was anxious to get to the point of the matter. While the teenager had indeed been anxious about the whole thing, her mother was also anxious. She could be protective and worrisome like any parent, no doubt even more with not knowing much about this mysterious institute for those like Corrine, and having the basics at best. So, for now the teenager settled sitting around the booth-like set up of the table to let the two adults talk for now. Gathering her thoughts, Danielle took a moment to consider what seemed the most important before turning her attention to Bobby fully once more, " From what you've said Bobby, everyone there is a mutant. But how exactly does the institute help its students with their powers? Do all the students stay at the institute, and go to school still? How many instructors are there? And are they all former students like you?" With each question, Danielle did give some pause in-between to allow Bobby time to answer them as much as he could so she wasn't overwhelming him completely. Tags: Iceman

309 words | @thyreophora "It is!" Bobby said enthusiastically when Corrine mentioned his powers sounded pretty badass. "Part of my powers is ice mimicry, where I can transform myself into ice. I look pretty sleek, but when I was just starting out, I looked more like Frosty the Snowman--"
Ms. Burns cleared her throat and Bobby clamped his mouth shut. She mentioned getting down to business and Bobby said, "Yes, ma'am," with a sheepish grin as they got settled.
Ms. Burns began asking questions (rightfully so, Bobby obviously could never fault her for such a thing) and Bobby did his best to answer as well as he could.
"The Xavier Institute was founded by Professor Charles Xavier as a way to help young mutants grow with their powers," Bobby said. "We're mutants because of an activated x-gene in our DNA that's not found in regular humans, and this x-gene continues to grow and develop with the individual mutant. The Xavier Institute has the room, funds, and technology to help mutants grow with their abilities through practice and just being a safe space.
"The students are enrolled in Bayville High School for a typical education," he continued, "unless their abilities prevent them from doing so, in which case they'd be homeschooled at the institute. One of the other institute teachers is also the principal of the high school, so she'll be there to help in both senses. And it'll be difficult to get away with anything," he added, sending a quick wink to Corrine.
"There are four of us as instructors right now," Bobby said, "and we've all grown up at the institute. Kurt Wagner, the headmaster, was part of the first class, so to speak. Sierra Parker, who is also the Bayville High principal, joined a bit before myself and Jubilation Lee. We've all found our way back after Kurt reopened the place."

Both Corrine and her mother listened closely as Bobby answered each of Danielle's questions, that and more in fact. Even some of the smaller questions that had crossed Danielle's mind seemed to be covered in the man's explanation regarding the institute, who they were, what they did, and about mutants to an extent. Where Danielle listened to everything intently, Corrine had listened with the most interest regarding mutants. Though that was mainly because she had yet to meet anyone else who was a mutant like herself in the area, as well as having so many questions about why she was like she was at all. So it was down to genetics? Was it random or inherited? Did that mean Corrine might have inherited a dormant gene within her family that was never known until now? There was so many she had, but decided now wasn't the time or place. But, Corrine could also see her mother had many more questions. Questions that could keep them there for hours. " It sounds like a great place to me! Maybe the only way I'll really know the place is by going like you suggested mom. Can't hurt to try right?" Corrine prompted hoping to stop the flow of questions before her mother could launch into more. Luckily, the older woman seemed to get it was time to let things go. Her curiosity had been answered, more than that even. " Right, I suppose we could be here all day if I keep going like this." Danielle conceded, nodding to her daughter who quickly rushed back down into the lower deck sleeping quarters. Still, the woman smiled at Bobby, " Thank you for taking time to answer my questions Bobby, I suppose I'm just being a little overprotective I might just keep you here all day." That said, it didn't take long for Corrine to return with a backpack and medium suitcase figuring anything else she might need her mom could easily mail over. " Ready to go whenever." The usually quiet teen spoke with enthusiasm for once. Tags: Iceman

322 words | @thyreophora | Shall we wrap it up here? Let me know if you want to keep going or if I should lock this. Both of the women in front of him listened intently to his responses, and Bobby mentally gave himself a pat on the back for his answers. In his opinion, he was clear, concise, and hadn't sounded nervous, so it was a win in his book.
It was even better when Corrine piped up that she was willing to go and give the Xavier Institute a try, figuring that she would learn more about it as a student herself. She seemed to not-so-subtly suggest to her mother to agree, allowing Corrine to disappear from the room to presumably pack and put a pause on any other questions Ms. Burns may have.
Bobby returned the smile with his own grin, but he did make a point to say, "Obviously we can leave whenever both of you are comfortable, and should you have more questions, I'm more than happy to keep answering them until everyone is satisfied."
Ms. Burns mentioned she may be acting overprotective, and Bobby said, "That's completely understandable. It's a big step in both of your lives. We're always available if you need us, though. Here." From his pocket, Bobby fished out one of the business cards that had been created and ordered for the institute specifically to give out to parents and guardians of their young charges. "Phone numbers, emails, all the contact information you would need if you don't have them for us at the institute. And, honestly, the time zone may not even make much of a difference. Sierra Parker's main ability is talking to electronics, so even if you call in the dead of night, there's a good chance at least Sierra will pick up, heh."
Corrine returned with her luggage and Bobby offered to help carry it. "If we're sure we're all set," he said, giving the mother and daughter duo a chance to say goodbye. To Corrine, he grinned and added, "Hope you like the jet we have!"
