210 words | open! | Thurs. January 18, 2024 -- time of the day is open to interpretation Noelle was frowning at the copier, the machine not wishing to cooperate at the moment.
"I believe you are lying," Noelle said to the copier when it claimed (yet again) that there was a paper jam in one of the drawers. She opened and checked on all of the available drawers and doors that she could open on the machine and saw no evidence of a paper jam. The copier itself was probably older than her son but, aside from today, it never gave her any trouble before.
With a sigh, Noelle put her study packets aside, rolled up her sleeves, and reached over to unplug the copier. When it doubt, turn the machine off and on again. She waited for a good few seconds before plugging the copier back in and carefully emptying out the paper trays before putting the stacks of paper back in neatly. She checked the ink levels, cast another critical eye over the rolls and other components that she could see, before trying once more to copy her page of notes on Shakespeare's Hamlet.
The copier whirred and gave her false hope before it stated that there was still an invisible paper jam somewhere.
"There must be another copier somewhere else in the building," Noelle muttered.

"Got an even older copier over in the science wing."
Rupert had arrived in the office area just in time to hear Noelle muttering about another copier. He took a swig of coffee from his mug before gesturing at the copier. "That one acting up? Have you tried turning it off and on again?"
His suggestion was more sarcasm rather than an actual piece of advice. He put down his coffee and the box of magnets he had been carrying on one of the other tables and went to stare at the error message the copier was giving Noelle.
"I take it you tried emptying out everything?" Rupert drawled even as he opened up the main paper tray that the damn copier was claiming had a jam in it. After reconfirming that there was no paper jam that he could see, Rupert went back to his box of magnets and dug around it in for a moment to produce a screwdriver. He was about to take the drawer all the way out of the copier and paused right before starting to unscrew the bolts.
Glancing at Noelle with a crooked smile, he asked, "Think the principal will be upset if I take this thing apart?" ( Noelle Perez, open!)

Rupert appeared and mentioned an ancient copier in the science wing, and Noelle pursed her lips in thought. Did she have the time and want to trudge to the other side of the high school grounds, or was she stubborn enough to make this particular copier work for her?
"A few times," Noelle drawled when Rupert asked if she had tried turning the copier on and off again. She nodded to his next question, ignoring her curiosity at his box of magnets for the moment, and stepped back when the other teacher tried his hand at making the paper jam error message go away.
Noelle raised an eyebrow as Rupert took a screwdriver out of his box and was about to go to town on the copier itself. "Should I ask about your box of supplies?" she asked rhetorically.
Then Rupert asked about the principal's potential feelings on the copier being taken apart, and Noelle shrugged. "I'm unsure," she admitted. "It'd be great if you could fix it by doing so, but if you make it worse... I'm not going to dissuade you because I need these copies, but I am not taking any claim in this plan of yours, either."

Rupert chuckled when Noelle asked about his box of supplies, and he waved towards it as he tried to maneuver the copier into a decent place for him to use the screwdriver. "Going to do a unit on magnets and electricity," he said simply. "Don't worry about the other tools in there."
It was easier to carry around his screwdriver, pliers, hammer, and drill in the magnet box than to keep them in a separate toolbox.
He grinned up at the other teacher when she responded to his question about Parker. "A neutral stance isn't the worst one to take," he said. "You do realize I would plead innocent should she catch me because I'm trying to fix this for you, right?"
Despite his words, Rupert was still game to take the copier apart to figure out what was making it tick. Or not tick, in this case. He paused before glancing up at Noelle and asking, "Mind unplugging the copier? I probably shouldn't be poking it while it's still on." ( Noelle Perez, open!)
