Friday afternoon, December 8, 2023 | 182 words | open! | Just Noelle out and about. The weather was being odd.
Not so odd, Noelle supposed, for a New England state, but it was strange to her that there was snow and ice on the ground from a recent snowfall -- not too big of a storm from a couple of days ago, just enough to leave behind fluffy flakes on the ground -- that was already melting. The sun was strong today and if it hadn't been December, Noelle would have thought twice about actually wearing her jacket today.
Of course, she spotted students out and about without their own jackets, and a handful even wearing shorts, which didn't surprise her in the slightest. Typical teenagers.
She did think of her own son, talking to him often enough through texting and phone calls to know that he was doing fine in Bayville's winter. She didn't think this was a typical winter, but Mason assured her that his body had yet to try to inconveniently hibernate because of the cold.
Still, as she passed by a couple of shop windows, maybe she should try to get him another scarf or warm hat...

Sierra was out doing some shopping herself, finding little trinkets and gifts for the holidays when they rolled around. She figured the majority of the students would return to their families for the holidays, but she still wished to give them each a little something. Then, of course, there were the other instructors in the manor, with some being easier to shop for than others.
"How are you doing?" Sierra asked, catching up to Noelle's side. Sierra herself was wearing a light jacket, mostly leather to help tamper down any stray static electricity. Generally, the dry, cold weather generated enough electricity that made Sierra stay out of others' way. However, it was a little warmer than usual this time of the year, something that Sierra wasn't sure was suspicious or not. Global warming was a thing, of course, but this weather still seemed odd.
"Holiday shopping?" Sierra asked mildly.

Noelle heard a familiar voice nearby and she turned to greet Sierra with a smile.
"Good afternoon," she said, almost catching herself from calling Sierra Ms. Parker. The pair were on a first name-basis outside of work -- and possibly at the school, but Noelle tended to be more formal when students were around -- but habits sometimes were difficult to break. That, and it was a bit odd to be having a casual conversation not only with her boss but with someone who was also helping to raise her son due to his genetics.
To be honest, it was almost as if she was co-parenting but with other adults who were much more capable at the job rather than her ex.
"I'm doing well, thank you," Noelle said. "I hope the same is true for you. While holiday shopping should be on my mind, I was just taking a walk, seeing what called to me. What of you? Are you shopping?" she asked in return, nodding to the shopping bags that Sierra had.

While Sierra liked to believe that she got along well with all of the faculty and the rest of the staff at the high school, Noelle was one of her favorites. It helped that Noelle was also the mother to one of the new recruits at the institute and, as such, was on Sierra's side for much more than just staff meetings and budget reports. It was pleasing that the two women got along so well.
"It is a nice day for a walk," Sierra agreed, "although I do find this weather to be a bit odd at this time of the year... I'm not sure if I should complain or not.
"A bit of holiday shopping," she responded, glancing down at her bags. "I set out with the goal to get at least three gifts today. Allocating my shopping like that helps amid everything else I have to do."

"I was thinking the same," Noelle admitted when Sierra mentioned that she wasn't sure if she should complain about the weather or not. With a wry smile, she added, "Of course, I'm also judging some of the teenagers I'm passing by who are in shorts... I imagine they would be in shorts even if it was chilly out, anyway."
Sierra admitted that she was doing some of her holiday shopping, detailing how she spread her holiday shopping list out, and Noelle said, "That sounds like a good way to do. It makes it so it doesn't seem like you're spending too much money at once.
"Were you able to get your three gifts already?" she asked. "I can only imagine how busy you are, particularly with this time of the year. Do you have many gifts to get?"
Noelle herself didn't have too many people to buy for. Rather, it was mainly Mason. She had already mailed out gifts to her parents across the country, and they'll video chat on Christmas day.

"We probably did something similar when we were younger. Sacrificing comfort for style."
Sierra herself had never been one for style as a teenager, but she understood it was a typical behavior for teenagers. As a teen, Sierra dressed for necessity, especially with her abilities. Fabrics that dampened static electricity made up the majority of her wardrobe, usually in muted colors to keep her in the background.
"It does help with budgeting," Sierra agreed, glancing at her shopping bags. "I've gotten two so far. I'm wandering around at the moment to see if anything in any of the shop windows catches my eye for anyone else on my shopping list."
Willow had been the simplest to shop for, since Sierra was sure the girl would be thrilled to receive any kind of gift. Eddie had been similar, having enough interests and enthusiasm to find a gift easily enough. Roy and Noah would be a little difficult, but both could use many things and she was sure they'd be grateful just to be thought of. Mason was in the middle, but he was next on Sierra's list, as she wanted to get him something before he presumably left the manor to spend Christmas vacation with his mother.
"Perhaps you can give me some ideas for Mason," Sierra said to Noelle.

"Perhaps," Noelle agreed with a small smile when Sierra mentioned that they too probably sacrificed comfort for style when they were younger. "In my defense, I grew up on the other side of the country. I didn't have to worry too much about the cold."
As the two women continued to walk, Noelle glanced over at Sierra and asked, "If you don't mind the question, where are you from? Were you always a Bayville native?"
Sierra mentioned that she had gotten a couple of gifts already, and Noelle wondered just how many gifts Sierra bought for her household. Sierra then asked about Mason and Noelle hummed in thought.
"I wouldn't want you spending too much on him," Noelle said. "I'm sure he'll be thankful just to be thought of." She paused. "That, and he's basically the only one I buy for around the holidays, so he'll be spoiled at home.
"If you do want to buy him a little something," Noelle continued, "he could always use warm clothing. I'm sure he has enough hats, scarves, and gloves, but... Well, sometimes he doesn't do well in the cold. When it actually is cold," she muttered as she glanced at the sunny sky.
"He does enjoy jokes," Noelle said, "and being active. Board games, outdoor activities, a new set of cards... Things he can play with friends he'd appreciate. Books with colorful photos of other countries he'd also find interesting."

Tag: Noelle Perez, open! Words: 192 Noelle mentioned that she had grown up on the other side of the country and asked Sierra where she was from. "I've always been on this side of the country," Sierra said. "I grew up near Boston and spent the majority of my teen years at Xavier's Institute. So, not quite a native, but for the majority of my life, I've been in Bayville. I've grown used to all kinds of weather, for the most part.
"What about you?" Sierra turned the question on Noelle. "What brought you all the way over here if you are originally from the other side of the country?"
Noelle mentioned that Mason would be spoiled at home during the holidays, and Sierra couldn't help her small smile. "I'm sure," she said, "but I would like to get a little something for him like I'm doing for the others." Noelle gave Sierra some ideas regardless and Sierra mulled them over. Perhaps she could find some sort of group game that Mason could share with the others.
As they continued down the sidewalks, Sierra asked, "Aside from having Mason home, do you've any other plans for the holidays?"

Sierra spoke about where she was from, letting Noelle know that she had been in New England all her life. It only cemented that the abnormal weather was indeed abnormal if someone like Sierra, who had lived in this part of the country all her life, found it odd.
The topic of weather was pushed out of Noelle's mind as Sierra asked Noelle about her own past, and Noelle answered, "Marriage and divorce, to be honest. Mason's father was an actor and I a journalist, so we spent some time in L.A. for our careers. Once we broke up, Mason and I went to Florida, then up here when Mason... Well, he was a few years into being a teenager." Noelle was certain Sierra would pick up as to why Noelle and Mason moved after Florida. Mason's mutant gene had begun to show itself around that time.
"That is a very short explanation," Noelle said with a light chuckle. "Don't regret the moves, though. I believe both Mason and myself are thriving here in Bayville."
Talk turned to the holidays and vacation itself, and Noelle said, "Nothing too much aside from some relaxation and maybe a day trip here or there with Mason. What about you? Does your home get a little chaotic with the holidays?"

Tag: Noelle PerezWords: 160 "I apologize for bringing that up," Sierra said quietly when Noelle mentioned that she had essentially moved at least in part due to her divorce. Noelle didn't seem upset at the talk, thankfully. She was speaking in a matter-of-fact manner. Sierra had no reason to believe Noelle felt otherwise.
Even so, Sierra did say, "Despite the reasoning as to your moves, I am glad I got to know Mason and you."
Noelle mentioned her few plans for the school break, and turned the question on Sierra. "Most of my vacation will most likely involve prepping for the next half of the school year," she confessed. "I don't typically relax well. I like to have something to do.
"My home can get a bit chaotic," Sierra said with a small smile, "due to who lives there... However, I believe a good handful of our charges will be going home to their families, so we may have some quiet time as well."

180 words | Gigabyte to see | Figured we can wrap this up to get some new threads on the board. Thank you! "Oh, don't worry about that," Noelle said, waving off Sierra's apology. "I'm over it. Rather, over him, and it was years ago at this point. And I got Mason out of it, so I can't say I completely regret the relationship."
She thanked Sierra when the other mentioned that she was glad to know Mason and herself, and Noelle returned the sentiment. "It's been an absolute pleasure, and relief, I'll be honest, to know you all as well. The support has been phenomenal."
Noelle laughed when Sierra admitted to not relaxing well during vacations. "I certainly hope you'll find the time to relax instead of working the entire time. If need be, I'll contact Mr. Wagner and suggest that he ensure you take a break."
The pair came to a crossroad, and Noelle paused, knowing which way her home was and guessing that Sierra would be going the opposite way. "I suppose this is where we part for now. I enjoyed our walk and talk, Sierra. I hope you have a good weekend, and I'll see you at work on Monday."
