monday, september 11, 2023 | 210 words | open | first period of the day, probably english lit. III based on the schedules "Good morning, class."
Noelle smiled, greeting the students as they made their way into the classroom. Being first period, most didn't seem too awake just yet, but she hoped they would perk up soon. Noelle herself had a cup of coffee that she was still nursing and didn't mind if the students themselves had a drink as long as it was in a tight enough container so there wasn't any danger of drinks spilling onto the books they discussed.
Food, on the other hand, was a different issue. While Noelle hoped everyone had time for breakfast before coming to school, she couldn't tolerate food during class. She wanted to avoid crumbs lodging themselves in the spines of the books or pages from being turned with fingers full of cheesy residue from snacks.
Being a new week, Noelle was ready to dive into some of the stories and plays on the curriculum. Once the class got settled, Noelle took attendance and plopped a pile of packets onto one of the front row students' desks.
"Here's hoping you've chased away any remaining end-of-summer blues over the weekend," Noelle said. "This week, we'll be discussing 'Twelve Angry Men,' a teleplay by Reginald Rose. Has anyone seen the play before? Any version of it?"

♡ Noelle Perez, English Lit. III peeps WORDS 205 NOTES Foxtrot is also in this class, feel free to reference him. Mondays sucked. Clarissa wasn't quite used to waking up in time for classes just yet. She was never late, no (at least, not yet this school year), but it was still a chore to wake up to an alarm rather than her body waking up naturally. She also dearly missed spending her days at the beach. Her new wardrobe was wonderful, obviously, but there was nothing like soaking up the sun in a new bikini. This morning, she gave Ms. Perez a brief nod for a greeting as she made her way to her seat, her coffee cup nearly permanently attached to her lips as she willed the caffeine to work. Clarissa seemed more awake every passing moment, but she couldn't help the grimace when Ms. Perez slammed a pile of paper down on one of the front desks and informed them all that they were going to start with a play. "Think I have," Clarissa mentioned when the teacher asked if they had seen the teleplay. Or parts of it, anyway. It sounded like something her father or Isaac would have watched. "Why don't we just watch the teleplay? Besides, being called Twelve Angry Men, I doubt there are any good parts for women."

The beginning of school was always something to get used to again, but Vanessa never minded starting the day with an English class. Although gothic horror was always Vanessa's favorite -- and they tended to be missing from school curriculums -- Vanessa didn't mind most of the books Bayville's public schools had thrown at her. Ms. Perez seemed like she knew what she was doing, as well, so Vanessa had high hopes for this year's English class.
Even if some of her classmates weren't as enthusiastic.
"Shakespeare's plays were always performed by men, even the female parts," Vanessa mentioned when Clarissa spoke up. Her tone was quiet, casual, but willing to correct someone. "Why can't a woman play the part of a man? Especially with how sexist some older literature can be."
To Ms. Perez, Vanessa said, "I've seen the teleplay and have read it before. Considering one of the major themes is prejudice, it's something that my parents shared with me a couple of years ago." ( Noelle Perez Clarissa Jenkins)

At the very least, it sounded like Noelle's first period class had a few spitfires that would be great at debates.
Noelle had gotten a few affirmatives -- aside from Clarissa and Vanessa -- that they have seen Twelve Angry Men, or at least heard of the teleplay. "Good to hear," Noelle said. "Then this should be a simple first unit."
To Clarissa's question, as disdainful as it was put, Noelle said, "We will watch the teleplay at the end of the unit. There are three acts in this play. Each day we'll assign parts, read the act aloud, and discuss when necessary. If we don't finish reading an act during class, then finishing it on your own along with the study questions to answer will be homework."
She waited for the inevitable groans at the idea of homework before continuing. "Yes, I know, but you're mostly sophomores and juniors, you should be used to homework. We'll start act one today. We'll do act two tomorrow, then act three on Wednesday. We'll go over the answers on Thursday and start the movie." Noelle paused. "Now, we can either finish the movie on Friday and have the test on Monday or we can get the test over with on Friday and finish the movie after the weekend for an easy Monday morning."
She smiled. "In the spirit of a jury, I'll let the class decide by a unanimous vote."

♡ Clarissa barely hid a glare at Vanessa. It was too early to be contradicted by another student, let alone the teacher, over something as inane as plays from Shakespeare's time. Others echoed that they had at least heard of, if not seen, the teleplay, and Clarissa focused on the slight burn on her tongue she got from taking a long sip of her coffee. Ms. Perez gave a brief overview of how the class would go about the unit, and it sounded like it would only take about a week to get through it. Something simple for the beginning of the year, no doubt. Still, Clarissa had to stop herself from rolling her eyes when the teacher mentioned that they would all vote -- and need to agree -- on when to have the test. Clarissa really didn't care and probably would just vote for the majority and let the other students convince each other. "An easy Monday or more time to study for the test..." Eddie, one of the newer students to Bayville High -- and there were quite a handful of them this year for some reason -- leaned back in his seat to the right of Clarissa as he thought. While he pondered, he looked awake and delighted at this opportunity to discuss. "We should hurry up and choose," Clarissa said. "The longer we take to decide, the more homework we get tonight.""True," Eddie said. Apparently taking the reins of the matter, Eddie glanced around and asked the class, "Alright, who votes for getting the test over with on Friday?"Clarissa, after a quick glance around, raised her hand with that group. Eddie, she noticed, did not raise his hand.

Vanessa could feel Clarissa's heated gaze on her and promptly ignored her classmate. Clarissa didn't seem to be the type of person who others contradicted on a regular basis, despite how much she could use it. Vanessa didn't mind being that person.
Ms. Perez gave the class an interesting choice and promptly turned it into a lesson by deciding that everyone needed to agree on the result. A newer classmate to Bayville, Eddie, had no problem speaking up and getting the voting started. Vanessa raised her hand with a decent amount of other classmates to vote on having the test Friday, but there were others who needed convincing.
"Aside from just getting the test over with if we have it on Friday," Vanessa spoke up to those who voted the other way, "it'll be fresh in our minds at that point in the week. We risk whatever happens on the weekend, least of all other homework from the rest of our classes, pushing aside the details of the teleplay from our minds if we wait until Monday. Besides, watching the rest of the movie after the weekend will be a nice reward."
It seemed like a no-brainer to Vanessa, but she was willing to hear out the other side. ( Noelle Perez, Clarissa Jenkins/ Foxtrot)

At the moment, most of Noelle's students sounded cordial as they began discussing the pros and cons of each choice that she had presented to them. Noelle herself was in front of her desk, leaning back on it without actually sitting on the top of it, as she observed the discussion.
She was pleased that some of the students didn't seem to mind taking charge, with Eddie speaking up to begin the initial voting process so everyone could see where each of their classmates stood on this choice. Despite Clarissa and Vanessa ready to butt heads, they were on the same side, and Vanessa spoke beautifully about the pros of having the test on Friday.
In order to help, Noelle went to the whiteboard to create a small chart for pros and cons for having the test on Friday and Monday. She listed some quick bullet points under Friday's pro section, abbreviating what Vanessa had stated, and waited to hear anyone else's additions or counterpoints to fill in the rest of the chart.

Andrew was, quite honestly, just going to let everyone else discuss when they wanted to take the test before casting his own vote. He didn't mind either way, being confident that he would do well on the test whenever they took it.
Then Clarissa voted for getting the test over with on Friday and, giving her a shit-eating grin from across the classroom, raised his hand to vote on having the test be on Monday.
He half-listened as Vanessa spoke about the pros of having the test on Friday and he said, "Eloquently spoken. My counterargument, though, is that by taking the time to finish the movie on Friday, it's an extra way to study. Some of our classmates may remember the teleplay's ending better with the help of the movie's ending rather than just rereading the script. And even if we do have other homework, I'm certain we all can find the time for some extra studying."

♡ If it wasn't the first period class and her coffee wasn't so delicious, Clarissa would have marched across the classroom and dumped whatever was left of her drink on Andrew's head. As such, her only response to his stupid grin was to give him a withering look. When he started arguing in favor of having the test pushed to Monday, Clarissa wondered if she'd get detention for flinging a pen at him with the intent of the tip going through the lenses of his glasses. Eddie apparently enjoyed Andrew's point of view, since the new kid snapped and said, "Exactly! I know I personally will remember the outcome of the teleplay better if I see it as the movie before the test. Then over the weekend, I'll reread the teleplay and be perfectly fine for the test on Monday.""Or you could just study throughout the week like the rest of us and get the test over with," Clarissa piped up. "Amid all the other homework we will no doubt get over the week?" Eddie countered. "While Vanessa said something similar regarding homework over the weekend pushing out the details of the teleplay, I think having that extra time would help cement the plot and ideas of the teleplay in our heads."Speaking of heads, Clarissa was ready to make some roll. She actually noticed a few people who had voted for getting the test over with on Friday looking a little too thoughtful at the moment.

Vanessa was certain this would be one of the few times she and Clarissa agreed upon something. She was certain that Andrew was arguing the opposite point of view just to piss off Clarissa, which amused Vanessa to no end.
Despite not trying too hard to smother her smile at Andrew tossing a grin at Clarissa -- and Clarissa's deadpanned glare right back at him -- Vanessa could concede that Andrew made a couple of good points. One of the new kids of the school backed Andrew up, and Vanessa could concede that others learned and studied in different ways. While she still would very much prefer to get the test over with on the Friday before the weekend, she did glance around at the rest of the class to see if any others' minds were changed to have the test on Monday.
Maybe she thought too soon about agreeing with Clarissa...
"I can get behind that," Vanessa said once Eddie was finished speaking. Glancing around, she said to the rest of the class, "New show of hands. Who wants the test on Monday?" There were more of their classmates voting this way, Vanessa included. ( Noelle Perez, Clarissa Jenkins/ Foxtrot, Andrew Harvey)

Noelle was rather pleased at how spirited some of her first period students could get, especially on a Monday morning.
And, okay, she recognized that there may have been a little rivalry between a couple of her students, but it made some of her students speak up. Noelle was well aware that some of the students wouldn't have minded either way when the test was. Having a little rivalry -- Noelle absolutely did not miss the exchanged looks between Clarissa and Andrew -- made them eager to prove the other wrong.
She was a little surprised that a Monday test seemed to be winning. Even Vanessa, who had taken the reins when it came to persuading the others that getting the test over with on Friday would be the best choice, had changed her mind.
Noelle wrote down Andrew's and Eddie's points as pros for having the test on Monday, aware that the visual helped some of her students make a decision, and she wordlessly began handing out copies of the teleplay as a small reminder that the original plan was to still go over act one that morning.

Andrew winked at Clarissa when she turned her withering glare to him, absolutely unperturbed at his friend's response. He did grin and agree with Eddie, and then Vanessa, despite Andrew being a bit surprised that they had been successful in changing her mind about the test.
Either that, or Vanessa had a better viewpoint when it came to Ms. Perez preparing to hand out the teleplay materials. It seemed to remind the majority of the class that they had other work planned for this period and whatever wasn't done would end up being homework.
Andrew glanced at the clock to gauge how much longer they had for first period, but really wasn't worried about the homework. Even if he didn't have enough time to read act one, he was confident he could research the internet quickly and efficiently to adequately answer any reading comprehension questions the teacher threw at them.
Seeing that Monday as the day of the test appeared to be winning, Andrew made a plea to those classmates that were still voting for Friday. "I think the rest of you should make the sacrifice now, vote for Monday, and let us get through as much of the work today as possible for less homework this evening."

♡ Ugh. Clarissa hated to lose, even for something as stupid as trying to figure out when to take a test. She acknowledged to herself that she probably wouldn't have cared as much if Andrew wasn't being as insufferable about it. Maybe she'd force him to do some of the homework for her as payback. She sighed and, when Vanessa asked for another round of voting and Andrew piped up about some of the class making the sacrifice so they had less homework tonight, Clarissa reluctantly raised her own hand to vote for Monday. It took about another round to convince the last few stragglers, what with Eddie of all people saying something about making a group study chat if that would help others, and Clarissa resisted the urge to roll her eyes. No way in hell was she joining that group chat. The teacher, meanwhile, had started passing out copies of the teleplay and Clarissa downed what was left of her coffee. What a way to start a school week.
