Date: Monday, July 24, 2023 Tag: @cherrybomb Words: 299 Notes: Takes place after Breaking News; apologies if it seemed like some slight power-play with Cherry. I figured it'd be easier to have Cherry wake up on her next post, but Mbaku if you wish for me to edit this, let me know. Sierra had asked Roy to help Cherry, to be there when she woke up from her small surgery when they set her broken bone and actually put a cast on it. Cherry had snoozed throughout most of the ride to the manor from Florida and was cooperative -- or too groggy and still not feeling well -- when they moved into the manor's infirmary. Sierra was able to do the small procedure and also took a bit of Cherry's blood to do a proper test for her genetics, being unsurprised when it proved that Cherry was a mutant just like they were. Roy hoped that Cherry had continued to rest well throughout the night.
It was determined that the rest of the manor shouldn't bombard Cherry just yet, not unless she wanted to meet others. Sierra had decided that Cherry had seemed to bond with Roy, had enough trust in him to help her escape her situation at the pharmacy, and that Roy may be the best person for Cherry to see when she woke up.
(Roy strongly believed that Sierra had heard Cherry call him handsome right before she fell asleep on the ride home. Sierra never said a word about it, but he guessed his face had been red enough to give him away that something had been said.)
Sierra mentioned that she would be nearby if needed, keeping to herself and going through the test results in the lab off to the side of the infirmary, but otherwise, Roy was waiting by himself in one of the chairs near Cherry's infirmary beds. He had a small tray of food ready for Cherry -- just some simple soup and a fresh roll -- next to him, keeping warm under a cloche.
Roy hoped everything would go well once Cherry woke up.

(OOC Note: this is absolutely fine, no need to edit )
She had slept like a rock (that was something her Dad always said) probably the most relaxing and greatest sleep she'd had over the last two years, so when her green eyes opened up a loud yawn escaped with a stretch, "ow," her head still hurt a litte and she almost knocked herself out with her cast...so what happened hadn't been some fever dream...then a familiar scent hit her nose and her head snapped up to look around the room.
the handsome, "blue hair kid?"
Yesterday events were wonky but fragments of certain things like names and the explosion itself, "Doyle? Was it Doyle?" dammit her head was hurting worse...another fall of fragments het arm had been broken..a jet...a woman, "I c..I can't remember a lot, was I in a accident?" if she couldn't piece it together maybe Doyle could help. Tag: @cherrybomb Words: 233 Roy heard Cherry stir before he heard her, and he waited quietly until she seemed to get her bearings.
Well, most of her bearings. "Uh, not Doyle," he said, keeping his voice quiet. "My name is Roy. Do you remember me? And Sierra?"
Cherry revealed that she didn't remember a lot and Roy took a moment to gather his thoughts. While doing so, he gathered up the tray with the soup and fresh roll, along with some water, putting the food on the table closest to Cherry.
"If you're hungry," he said. "I'll try to catch you up to speed while you eat. Try to eat slowly so you don't overwhelm your body.
"Let me know if I start talking too quickly," Roy continued. "Um, you're in the infirmary at the Xavier Institute, an estate in Bayville, New York. Sierra, one of the teachers of this place, and I went down to Florida to pick you up after... Well, yeah, guess it was an accident. You had been at a pharmacy trying to get medicine and there was an explosion."
He paused. "The explosion is what we believe broke your arm. Sierra was able to set it and put the cast on after we got back here and while you were resting."
Roy allowed Cherry a few minutes to let all that sink in before asking gently, "Any of that ringing a bell?"

The more ROY filled her in the more everything came back but it was still foggy like ones awareness in a dream. The fever. The pharmacist. The explosion. Piece by piece Roy filled in the details of the fog, listening to it made a fresh wave of guilt because truthfully she had been trying to steal medicine. The food he had offered smelled so good but the shame balled up in a knot in her stomach so she grabbed the water first drinking half of it.
When he asked if it rang a bell she had started to tear into her roll, she couldn't look at him, "yeah..yeah it is starting to, why am I at an institute? Is...is that where they put delinquents who tried to rob a pharmacy?" she wasn't scared, she knew what she had done was wrong in the eyes of the "law" but she was on her own two years alone. She took care of herself the way she knew how, it was lawless.
"are you a ward too? Does Seirra run this place?" Hydro

Tag: @cherrybomb Words: 306 Recognition seemed to dawn on Cherry's face the more Roy spoke, which was relieving to him. He was glad when she started to pick at the food, but he was surprised when she asked whether the Xavier Institute was a place for delinquents, even asking if he was one, too.
"Oh, no, sorry," Roy said. "This isn't an institute like that, it's not a place for delinquents.
"Besides," he continued, "you didn't actually steal any medicine. And the explosion was accidental. And that all happened down in Florida not even a day ago. We're here in New York. Last I heard, the authorities had no leads on finding the person who may have caused some property damage, but no one was hurt, soooo..."
He cleared his throat, suddenly aware of the path his train of thought had just taken. "I feel the need to repeat that this is not a place for delinquents."
God, he hoped Sierra wasn't listening in on the security cameras or something.
"The word institute is more so used in the sense, like, an organization or general group," Roy said. "We're like a specialty boarding school while getting public education if that makes sense. We all have something in common that led to us being here, Sierra included. She's one of the teachers." He paused. "Do you happen to remember the other part of the conversation Sierra and you had while on the jet?"
Sierra had run the tests, her theory being correct. Like them, Cherry was a mutant. Sierra hypothesized that Cherry had some sort of combustion-like abilities, although she wasn't quite sure how just yet. She guessed that Cherry's fever or being overheated had something to do with it. It was currently why the air conditioner in the infirmary was probably just a bit more powerful than it usually was.

Cherry didn't honestly know what Roy was really talking about, but he was pretty clear about this not being like a school or place for delinquents (she really didn't know what a delinquent was either her daddy just called her that and institutes is where delinquents went when they was bad he said). The way he explained everything about her not being in trouble made her wonder who he was trying to convince, him or her? For her all she heard was a glorified loophole and excuses because he intentions and the results of what had happened was by the book of bad, she should be in trouble but as Kutz had always said, 'sometimes the sun shines onna dogs ass kid.'
It was chilly, not because the shiver that ran up her spine because she did remember the other wold ridiculous conversation, but also because it was cooler in the room. She pulled the blanket laying over her up closer maybe the soup was just warm enough to help, "How could I ever forget that Roy? Seriously the woman accused me of being a mutant...a...a..," she tore the roll again and dipped into the soup, "whatever. Did she run the tests? Did she send you to save her the embarrassment of saying...I was right?" there it was, some of the short fuse that was Cherry, when she was right and she was about to get to put them in their place....she even had a newfound smirk.
Dipping her spoon into the soup Cherry seemed to almost change again, she ate almost protectively over the soup, one arm across the front of her (the broke arm) hiding or guarding the roll between thumb and pointer, and with her good hand holding the spoon with a fist she slurped a big spoonful. Waiting for Roy to answer. Hydro

Tag: @cherrybomb Words: 314 Cherry seemed to take Roy's words in stride when he reiterated that she was not in trouble. In fact, she sounded like she was feeling better. Roy had no doubt she was still hurting, but she tugged the blanket and soup closer to her while speaking in full sentences. It was definitely an improvement from when they had first found her.
He wasn't quite sure what to make of her newfound smirk, though.
In response to her words, Roy's brows furrowed slightly, a touch confused at her attitude before smoothing his features. "No," he said simply when Cherry asked if Sierra had sent him in to save herself embarrassment. "Honestly, with the way she gathers knowledge, I think she usually welcomes times when she's wrong. It lets her learn.
"She wasn't wrong this time, though," he continued, keeping his tone casual. "You are a mutant whose abilities have to do with some form of combustion. Sierra's working on figuring out exactly how it works.
"That's what connects everyone at this school," Roy said. "We're all mutants, like you were told on the jet right before we came back up here to Bayville. Aside from you and me, there are a handful of other students around our age." Rather, what he believed Cherry's age to be. "Sierra is one of the few teachers here, all also mutants. We live here to grow with our powers.
"You wouldn't have to stay here if you don't want to," he continued. "I mean, you probably should take some time to heal up first, but it's your choice whether or not you want this place to be a home to you."
He paused before saying gently, "I'm sorry if this is a lot to take in at once. I can try to answer questions you have, explain things more... Or leave you be for a while, if you want."

Cherry broke. She was a mutant and she had the very vaguest idea of how 'DNA stuff' worked it was science and it was usually very correct plus she seen all of them 'whose the baby daddy' shows her daddy use to watch as he ridiculed her mom. She could hear him saying with a big gut laugh, 'ain't gotta find out WHO ya momma is Cher, just WHERE she is!" then he would kill his beer and then six more before passing out.
Why was she thinking about him she wondered, silent and staring at a spot on the floor beyond the bed shoulders slumped listening to Roy. She had options he said so himself: stay be with her peers and kind, lay low (may be she could hustle some money from these people) until her arm healed then probably haul tail back to Miami, or just kick rocks now. Cherry wasn't in trouble it seemed but...
"I got no place to go, Kutz is dead, my Mother ghosted me young, I got like one friend back in Miami," finally the stare broke as her eyes went back to the soup and the good hand pushed her long red hair back behind her ears, "and now I'm one of you...," she said it with a heavy grim tone, "...and there is other us'es here, to do what? Schoolin'? I haven't been in a school since I was fifteen and even before that I just rarely went, what will I do? Are...can you make me better? Cure me?"
She had remembered him saying her mutation was some kind of combustion which she knew meant boom! She looked at her hands as if they were sticks of dynamite. Hydro

Tag: @cherrybomb Words: 260 His confirmation about her being a mutant seemed to make Cherry deflate. The smirk was gone, replaced by, what Roy guessed, shock.
Cherry revealed she had no place to go. Roy didn't know who Kutz was, he felt sympathy regarding her mother and one friend in Miami, but did his best to listen as she tried to gather her thoughts aloud.
"Being a mutant is part of our DNA," Roy said. "This is a safe space to grow and learn with our powers, not to be rid of them. It's a safe space for all of us who may not have anywhere else to go."
Cherry commented on school and Roy gave her a crooked smile. "Well, the manor here is for a roof over our heads and to learn about our powers, but we'll also have regular school in the fall to better fit in and to try to have a normal teenage experience. Guess homework is supposed to be part of that. I actually haven't been to a public school ever, so... If you're up for it, we can figure that out together with the others here. We got a good group of other teens like us.
"If someone out there is looking into a cure, we don't know about it," he said, his tone laced with an apology. "But I do know Sierra and the other teachers of this place are researching how to best help you with your powers." He paused. "I'm hoping you'll be able to give them, and the rest of us, a chance."
