Monday, July 31, 2023 | 188 words | @silica | Silica's first appearance! PM me if I messed up anything about Glassy Wonders, and I'll edit my post if need be. Noelle was still getting used to Bayville. She was settling in just fine, being used to moving, but she was still new enough to the city to not yet know all of its hidden treasures.
Considering Noelle was on her own with her son otherwise occupied, Noelle found herself with some time amid preparing for her first year of teaching at Bayville High School. When she needed a break from lesson planning and her freelance writing contracts, Noelle challenged herself to find something new to her in Bayville. The uptown area was ripe with little shops, perfect for a day of window shopping.
Today, Noelle found a shop that looked as if it just recently opened. "Glassy Wonders," she murmured to herself, seeing some of the art glasswork on display in the front window. They caught the sunlight beautifully, glinting in the beams, and Noelle headed towards the shop.
She opened the door gently, unable to find any store hours posted. "Excuse me?" Noelle asked, trying to spot someone. "Are you open? I'm afraid I couldn't find the store hours posted and didn't want to interrupt if you are closed."

Indeed, the shop was relatively new. The first thing that Noelle would notice when first stepping into the shop that it was on the smaller side, the displays organized in a way to make use of the space of glass art, organized by size, shapes, colorations; some were neatly stacked on small display shelves or larger pieces placed upon tables while others were carefully strung up in a way to catch the lighting at different angles. Though, there were still talltale signs that the shop wasn't quite done, some places sectioned off and being painted, a few boxes stacked off towards the side as to not be in the way of customers. Towards the back of the shop was a small counter, a smaller hallway splitting off towards a hidden back area and another to a stairway leading up to a loft above. At the sound of a voice however, movement could be heard from the back followed by a "One moment!", a woman appearing in her late twenties soon appearing as she brushed off her hands. " Hello, yes we're open!" Reina greeted the woman, offering Noelle a kind yet impish smile. " Sorry about that, I only really just opened up in the area, so I haven't had a chance to put up the hours. Probably should have done that before anything else." The woman mused as she brushed some dust from her clothes, her hair pulled back in an unkempt bun on her head. " But I'm Reina Krause, owner of this little shop. Apologies for the mess, only really just started getting everything set up the past few days." The woman gestured to the unfinished spot in the shop, not seeming to mind the mess or seem embarrassed. No use in being ashamed of the mess, she was new there and still setting up. If anyone had an issue, they could speak to her about it. Reaching up to redo her hair so it didn't like a crazy mess, Reina continued, " There anything specific I can help you with today, or just browsing?" She inquired. Tags: Noelle PerezNotes: Nope! 172 words | @silica The little shop was cozy but filled with beautiful trinkets and treasures. Some of the hanging pieces in particular caught Noelle's eye.
Fortunately, Noelle was informed that the shop was open and the proprietor apologized for not having the hours up just yet. "Oh, please, it's your store," Noelle said. "I don't mean to rush you. However, your wonderful artwork caught my eye from the street, so I couldn't help but try to pop in.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Krause," Noelle said. "I'm Noelle Perez. While your shop looks lovely so far, I'm very interested in when you'll have it all set up and running. I can't even begin to imagine how beautiful this place will look with all of your pieces on display."
Reina asked if she could help Noelle find anything in particular or if she was just browsing. "Just browsing, I think," Noelle said, "but I will admit that my gaze keeps coming back to your hanging pieces. Tell me, do you think they'll survive a high school classroom?"

" Oh no rush at all!" Reina assured Noelle, but it was something she told herself to put at the top of her list. Just put it right next to finishing up her painting, organizing the displays, and getting her workshop put together. Still, the fact anyone seemed to take notice told her it was a start. Still, Reina smiled at Noelle's compliments, " Its a pleasure to meet you Noelle, hopefully I can help you find what you're looking for." Finishing pulling her hair back in a loose ponytail, Reina stepped from around the counter, coming to take a look at her hanging glassworks to see if she could help Noelle find something suitable. " And I'm hoping to get settled in pretty soon. It has been a work in progress, but since its such a little place shouldn't be too much longer." At least it shouldn't take too much longer...The shop had needed quite a bit of work done when she first bought it, mostly some cleaning, painting, and reorganizing, but it had been enough to get the business open for now. And if Noelle was any indication, it was enough to start catching some eyes. " High school setting, you're a teacher?" She inquired towards the other woman, coming by a group of hanging glassworks in an assortment of shapes mostly spirals, teardrops, and spheres. " These might hold up best if that's what you're interested in. Quartz is pretty durable, and should they get damaged I can gladly repair them personally no charge." She looked back at Noelle, " Or swing by personally. I'm fixing to start teaching at the high school myself." Tags: Noelle Perez

208 words | @silica "Oh, I'm certain I'll leave here with something," Noelle said when Reina commented that she hoped she would be able to help Noelle find something.
"You look like you've made excellent progress so far," Noelle complimented when the topic turned to the shop's state. "I'm looking forward to visiting when it's all set. Thinking on it, I suppose a shop for artwork such as these will always be a work in progress?" New art would always be appearing on the shelves, Noelle was sure. That kind of freedom that came with one's own shop sounded wonderful.
It was why Noelle herself wrote.
Reina led Noelle to the spirals, spheres, and teardrops, all of the pieces glinting beautifully, and Noelle reached up to gingerly touch one of the spiral pieces. "I'll take your word on their durability," she said, trying to determine which piece would go well with the decor she was planning for her classroom.
"Oh, wonderful!" Noelle said when it was revealed that Reina was also going to be a teacher at the high school. "It'll be my first year there. We'll be the new staff members together. I teach English literature. Will you be doing art, or do you have another subject that you'll be teaching?"

Reina was pleased that Noelle seemed so interested in her pieces already. One person may not be a lot, but it told her that at least the pieces were drawing the eye, a start for somewhere with her new business. And since there presently wasn't others who had entered, it gave her time to give Noelle any inputs, answer questions, or help her find a piece that may work for her. " Hm, I suppose you have a point. Art is a constant influx of change in its own right isn't it." Reina agreed with a smile. She figured there would be some pieces that would remain, and overtime she would rotate them out to do something new with the pieces, which was helpful when she already could manipulate the very element in her shop. " Guess by the time you return and visit, it'll be an entirely new shop." She joked, letting Noelle examine each piece as long as she needed. Though she couldn't help smiling slightly when Noelle said she would take her word on their durability, " Trust me, my technique with glass is a little...unique than most places. Even a rambunctious teenager would have to use a little force to break my works." Perhaps Reina was taking a little too much pride in her work and abilities, but she felt there was no shame in feeling some pride. Even as a mutant, the works still took time to perfect, to follow her vision she had for each and every piece. But when the subject turned to teaching, admittedly Reina was thrilled she wouldn't be the only new teacher. " Well, what a coincidence this is!" Small world Bayville seemed to be. " I'll just be teaching Art. I favor glassworks obviously, but I've studied other forms too, as well as Art History. Maybe in the long run I might petition to add Art History, change things up a bit. But I want to see how this first year goes." Reina explained as she leaned against an unused shelf. " Sure it will be quite the busy year for us newbies huh." Tags: Noelle Perez

207 words | @silica | edited to finish it "Fingers crossed the teenagers in my classes won't be rambunctious enough to harm your pieces," Noelle said dryly. She was hoping for some spirited students of course, all teachers wished to have classes of students who were just as interested in their subjects as the teachers themselves, but Noelle still wished that everyone would behave.
"I'm certain your art classes will be welcomed by the students," Noelle said. "To have a class where they can create something rather than sitting still and absorbing data will be an excellent way to round out their days.
"I hope the glasswork will be part of your curriculum," she said. "Or does the state have some... stricter, if you will, guidelines on the types of medium you'll be working with in a classroom?"
Reina mentioned how she hoped to add Art History on the high school's roster. "That sounds wonderful," Noelle said. "I'm not sure if you've met the principal just yet, aside from all the damn paperwork we needed to do in order to get on the payroll, but I'm certain Ms. Parker will advocate for you."
After a few moments, Noelle picked a piece, one of the spirals, and asked Reina to ring it up for her. "Thank you!"
